‘Riots always begin typically the same way’: food stamp shutdown looms Friday

Food stamp recipients face a massive benefit cut set to kick in when stimulus funds expire Friday. The nationwide cut “is equivalent to about 16 meals a month for a family of three,” according to a Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis using the USDA’s “Thrifty Food Plan.” CBPP called the roughly $5 billion annual cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “unprecedented” in “depth and breadth.”

“If you look across the world, riots always begin typically the same way: when people cannot afford to eat food,” Margarette Purvis, the president and CEO of the Food Bank for New York City, told Salon Monday. Purvis said that the looming cut would mean about 76 million meals “that will no longer be on the plates of the poorest families” in NYC alone – a figure that outstrips the total number of meals distributed each year by the Food Bank for New York City, the largest food bank in the country. “There will be an immediate impact,” she said.

“The fact that they’re going to lose what’s basically an entire week’s worth food” each month, said Purvis, “it’s pretty daunting.” She told Salon that while policymakers “are attempting to punish people for being poor,” and “people are comforted by believing that they know that a person has to have done something wrong in order to be poor,” in reality, “I can tell you that more and more folks have more than one job and are still needing help.”(continued)

Arab Spring originally started over food prices.

So, I'm told, did the French Revolution.

My teen son said to me the other day, “ our own people are equally responsible for our economy”. (Because they become dependent on welfare)

I was glad to see hes understanding the ramifications. While I understand some need assistance, I cannot understand 50%. People are making a living being the recipients of welfare fraudulently. I am sure each person thinks they are only one. But each person has turned into 50% dependent in some fashion.

“Maybe it’s time we started to seriously talk about the lack of jobs. D’ya think?”

BINGO!

The farm bill is under consideration — what to do about food stamps — NOTHING because more jobs will reduce food stamps automatically!

Immigration is under consideration — what to do about legalizing an illegal work force — NOTHING (except enforce immigration law) because fewer illegal immigrants mean more jobs.

etc. etc.
Time the topic of conversation got redirected on each and every liberal assertion.

I’m on disability, legitimately. Was lucky to be accepted on the first application, but I know some who have applied and appealed numerous times, but were rejected. Burns me up to see people collecting disability for addictions, hangnails or whatever, while others who legitimately can’t work are turned down. It will be the freeloaders who will bankrupt the system.

Or a Friday night of 40’s!

Sorry to hear about your condition.
It ticks me off as well that the system is being abused (and allowed to be abused) in such ways.
Good luck to you...

“I was the oldest of 6 hungry brats in a dirt poor family. In the 50s, we had pride and people were looked down on if they received charity. The most my mom every received was a couple of blocks of government cheese...”

My father always had a job and worked for Sun Oil Co. in east Texas and he always had a big garden so food wasn't a problem. However, they grew up in rural Arkansas where everyone had an outhouse. Our house in east Texas had four rooms and there was no indoor toilet until I was a sophomore in high school. I used the bathroom at school every day for No. 2, ‘cause I hated that outhouse. At night, each of us had a “chamber pot” under the bed in case we had to use one.

I thought if I ever got out of that house to live my life, I would have bathrooms. Now, I have two full and one half bathrooms.

So, what is happening now? If power goes out, water goes out, and I'm back to no working bathroom. This was not in my life plan to go backwards in bathrooms. I have worked out how to have a potty in the house even if water/sewer goes off and I have enough wet wipes for four people for a year. I am not going back to an outhouse, no way.

I am so old I have seen this country advance in miraculous ways, and now we may go back to the 1800s way of life. I OBJECT, I will keep my standard of living in my country (I am President For Life of my country - my house and back garden) regardless of what happens to this country.

I use shadowstats.com. I think it’s a far better measure than what the government puts out.

Anyone else here old enough to remember when being on aid was looked down upon?

There are still many Americans who pride themselves on making their way on their own efforts instead of on government handouts.

It seems the lighter the skin the more independent and self reliant the culture and traditions.

disabled, widowed senior citizen in Illinois who receives $31.00 per month in Link card funds,

That’s because their ‘income’ is counted against the amount of food stamps that a person with $0 income would get. They are not receiving the same amount of food stamps that a $0 income person receives.

They got a ‘stimkuluis’ increase from Obama years ago.

now that ‘stimulus increase’ is supposed to expire.

How does that equal 50% of their EBT money?

I thought the original increase was about 5%.

Keep in mind with your calculations that all those kids are getting free meals at school 5 days a week. Some are getting BREAKFAST, lunch & DINNER. For each kid, that is 15 meals a week. For a group of 4 kids in school, that is 60 meals a week.

I see people here in checkout lines with their EBT cards too, shopping at Whole Foods with expensive meat and other products in their carts..right to their new Mercedes Benz in the parking lot. I see it all the time..these people are not poor, they are just cheating the system, just like all Dems do

Missing: $400 Purse Holding $800 Cash, Plus Food Stamp Cards

"A woman said she noticed her purse missing from her car just before 5 P.M. Sunday. The car was parked at her residence on Hornet Drive.
The woman said the car had been locked, and the purse was in the back seat.

The purse was valued at $400, her wallet was valued at $200, and she said there was $800 cash in the purse, according to the police report.
Also missing were the woman’s food stamp cards."

Our house was built during the late 1800s, so I know that there were once outhouses on this property. Using a metal detector (I don’t own one yet), I may someday discover exactly where they were... that is where untold treasures may be hidden. I own a backhoe, so it would be easy to dig them up.

If our septic system were to go down for an extended time, I’ll dig a pit and use the Airstream trailer for our bathroom. ;>)

Good commentary on behavior the media calls “cultural” but is really nothing more than feral scumbags acting out their hate for anything non-black.

Their leaders, like Barack Obama and Eric Holder, have inculcated them with the idea that all actions by others are race based and that it is their right to push back in any way they like.

Ramen only needs half the seasoning packet. Save the remaining half to season something else. Same with just using half the amount of sugar in koolaid and less than half the amount of laundry detergent. Don’t forget to boil down the Thanksgiving turkey carcass to have stock for homemade soup at a later date. Hey, taxpayers have to scrimp and save so we can send more to the EBT crowd.
