It’s an express train — to the bad old days.
Cops are giving homeless people and panhandlers in the subways the kid-glove treatment, arresting subterranean scofflaws far less frequently than just two years ago, data show.
The ranks of the homeless, meanwhile, have swelled to 1,841 this year — a 13 percent increase over last year’s tally, the city’s Department of Homeless Services says.
For straphangers, it has created an atmosphere of fear.
“I feel threatened, especially taking the train at night,” explained Brooklynite Lortashia Smith, who said she has been followed off trains several times. “The police can definitely do more.”

Bad proof reading? Even 18,410 would be low.

No they can’t. If they do more that violates the rights and dignity of the homeless to occupy public spaces and harass people.
You live in a liberal city... stop expecting conservative results.

i ride them every day. there are professionals panhandling. One day one guy comes in and says hi mom just passed away,he just got out of prison and doesn’t want to go back. Next day a different guy came on with the same story.
Anyway i get on very near the end of the line near Coney Island. Many homeless sleeping on the train. Living there if you will. They get on at Coney which happens to have its own police station inside that very large terminal. These people obviously don’t have the fare. The cops put them on the trains to get them off the street.
Downtown Indianapolis is full of professional panhandlers.
These aren’t homeless, they’re making way more than min wage for just showing up plus no taxes.

we have gypsys too. they present themselves as a family. Maybe they are,maybe not. I sure don’t know. They go from car to car with the husband playing one of those piano type thinges hanging from his chest while the wife walks through the car baby in arms begging.

The predators out there who are labeled "homeless" are a totally different story.
