A black actor on the HBO drama series Treme said in a lawsuit on Friday that he wasstopped because of his race while buying sunglasses at Macys the third discrimination allegation made this week by a black shopper against a department store.
Robert Brown, who filed the lawsuit in state Supreme Court in Manhattan, said he was detained by police at the flagship Herald Square store on June 8 after employees contacted authorities about possible credit card fraud.
He said he was paraded while handcuffed through the store to a holding cell, where he was kept for nearly an hour while officers grilled him and searched his bag. His lawsuit said Macys employees suggested he couldnt afford to make such an expensive purchase. He eventually was released without charges.
The department store was profiling Brown because of his race, said his lawsuit, which seeks unspecified monetary damages.

If you read the article:
“he tried to show police officers his identification to prove his credit/debit card wasnt a fake but was told it was phony. He said he also produced the ID when buying the sunglasses.”
TV Actor Robert Brown Accuses Macys of Using Common Sense.
Does crying racism even mean anything anymore?
No, ignore it. Stop paying attention to these stories and they’ll fade away like a bad fart. They jumped the shark and over played their hand. This is like the washington wives bitching about rap or rock music, which gave those bands tens of millions of dollars worth a free advertising.
?
The fact that this happens to so few people tells me that it wasn’t about his race.
Why are rich brown celebrities buying fake temporary debit cards in the first place?
Sadly, the real news here is that he was BUYING sunglasses.
With that being said, there are a darned good number of hard-working, honest black people in this country, and it must ABSOLUTELY SUCK to be them.
He didn’t. You’re referring to another case that was mentioned in the same article.
“Earlier this week, two Barneys New York customers came forward with similar stories. Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips, who are black, said they were detained by police after making expensive purchases at the store.”
“Police said they were already in the store when Christian was taken into custody and they were contacted by the store after Phillips used a temporary debit card.”
OK, I thought it said this guy had one too
I’d like to hear the clerk’s version of the story..
If his version is the truth, then he has a case.
Guess what: he graduated from Amherst, made his movie debut opposite Sean Connery, and has a principal role in an ongoing HBO hit series - so maybe who you have or haven’t heard of isn’t the defining factor here.
Agreed.
You need an attitude adjustment. They also have a right to make purchases with their own money. As a lead actor in a long-running HBO series, he probably earns more than half the members of FR. I know his income is much, much more than mine. But no employee at Macy’s would ever dream of telling me what they thought I could or could not afford, because I’m white. This was completely uncalled for, and I hope he sues that store into oblivion.
No, it doesn’t. It sounds like creepy, envious, stupid racism. This guy is an established actor, starring in a current tv series.
I bet I could dress you up so that no department store clerk would let you within 20 feet of a jewelry counter.
The question is not what the color of his skin was, but what was he wearing, had he bathed in the last week, and how was he acting?
He is assuming it was because he was black, but I'm betting there were a lot of other factors involved.
If this man was profiled it is because he fits a profile. That profile being that most shoplifters at this Macy’s store are black. So he should blame his fellow blacks NYers for bringing suspicion down on him
Many/most of store security people are black anyway. They are doing the alleged profiling and do it well because they know how this game goes down
So some pansy-arse black actor living on cloud nine can pretend he exists apart from the criminal shoplifting actions of people who (unfortunately) look like him. But in a logical world he does not. We have our individual identities but also have our group identities and family identities
Do you really want to go down that road?
All kinds of things from affirmative action and quotas to reparations follow.
But this is “Liberal” New York.....I thought only those southern Tea Partiers were racist.
Just because there are group identities does not follow that group x y or z in entitled to anything.
When you get away from judging individuals as individuals to thinking of groups, I don't know if you can limit the consequences so easily.
