Jim DeMint: We Won't Back Down on ObamaCare
wsj.com ^ | October 17, 2013 | Jim DeMint

Posted on 10/17/2013 11:19:12 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

We know that premiums are going up due to ObamaCare—Americans are getting notices in their mailboxes every day. On Wednesday, Drew Gonshorowski of the Center for Data Analysis at the Heritage Foundation published research that shows exchange premiums are going up in all but five states. In North Carolina, for example, many consumers will find their premiums almost double when shopping on the government exchanges. The hardest-hit states, such as Georgia, Arizona, Vermont and North Dakota, will see premium increases of up to 150%.

Mr. Gonshorowski's research shows that the hardest hit by the increases will be young adults. "A state that exhibits this clearly is Vermont," he writes, "where the increase for 27-year-olds is 144 percent and the increase for 50-year-olds is still 60 percent, but far less. All states exhibit this relationship."

We also know that, once established, the cost of ObamaCare's new entitlements will not fall. Historical evidence suggests the opposite. Nearly 50 years ago, at the time of Medicare's enactment, it was projected that the federal government would spend $9 billion on Part A hospital services in 1990. Actual spending in that year totaled $67 billion—an increase of 644% compared with initial estimates.

Likewise, government officials originally projected that Medicare Part B physician services would require "federal appropriations of about $500 million a year from general tax revenues." Last year, the federal outlay for that program was $163.8 billion—overshooting the original estimate by more than 4,400%.

Given this track record, the Congressional Budget Office's projection that ObamaCare will cost "only" $250 billion (you read that right: a quarter-trillion dollars) a decade from now seems far-fetched.

There's a reason Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently claimed that ObamaCare will lead to a single-payer health-care system: It happens to be true.

We do have a subset of FReepers who recoil at the mention of Heritage, but not on this thread, I think. It really, really makes one wonder where their heads are.

All you need to do is look at my country, Canada. Healthcare costs are now approaching 50% of provincial budgets.

I don’t visit the liberal and homosexual sites but are most of them saying this health care crap is awful now or are they still in denial?

Ah, Rip Van Winkle. And on this website too.

If we could encourage Jim to run for president while those with courage are impeaching the jackass in the White Hut our nation might be extracted from the pit.

“Then explain how the Republicans control 26 states while the rats control 11. Living in liberal New Jersey is overwhelming your reasoning faculties.”

The “fundamental change” is national; you’re in denial about Republican control of anything. Solid Republican states have “gay marriage” forced on them by a liberal judiciary, and I haven’t seen 26 states refuse to participate in ObamaCare (or affirmative action, or legalized abortion, or anything else on the Dem agenda).

The demographics alone doesn’t explain it; it is the absolute domination of media outlets along with the demographics that make it impossible for Republicans. As long as they are portrayed as white bigots to the Third World’s losers that wash up here, the Dem majority is permanent.

You can't blame it on just the MSM.

The immigration issue has deeply divided the Republican Party. President Bush and then Presidential nominee McCain supported amnesty bills (Hagel-Martinez in 2006 and McCain-Kennedy in 2007) against the majority of their own party. Moreover, we had the sorry spectacle of people like Karl Rove and Lindsey Graham castigating their fellow Republicans [read Conservatives] who opposed amnesty using such epithets as bigots, racists, and nativists. These criticisms just reinforce the Democrat branding of the GOP and alienate minorities who perceive that they are not welcome in the party.

Moreover, being branded as a “racist” political party hurts the GOP in recruiting new members, regardless of race or ethnicity. America is not a racist country and no one wants to be associated with a racist organization.

The GOP is its own worst enemy. Look at how they are crucifying Cruz. The language of Peter King and John McCain against Cruz is destructive and uncalled for. Can you imagine any Democrat using such language against one of their own colleagues?

Why would anyone believe a republican anymore?
I sure don’t.

The McCain and Graham types never liked DeMint or any Conservative for that matter. He’s doing a great job right now at the head of Heritage.
I remember seeing DeMint and Pence mingling with the crowd on 9-12-2010 while most of the rest of Congress were absent or in hiding.

Like a typical brainwashed New Jersey dunderhead, you haven’t answered the question.

Frankly, I’m getting tired of your negative, surrender-monkey posts. You want to surrender, fine. Go find a hole to crawl into and leave us alone. We’re getting ready to fight, and you have no fight left in you.

Get lost.

Good for DeMitt. Obummercare has shown itself to be a disaster. They had one sign up in Delaware and they had a celebration! I’m sure a 10 year old could have designed a better web page for Obamacare. This is an epic disaster brought to you by Democrats and RINOS!!!

They’re having fits about the entire thing. Some are posting their policies then showing how much they’re going up. The deductibles are going way up and they are losing their plans because they don’t include all sorts of things like maternity care, etc. To be an “approved” plan you have to buy coverage for these things even if you will never use them.

I didn't know you would be forced to buy maternity and pediatric care when you are a male and have no kids. Mental health, additional prescription, pediatric and maternity, etc.

Single female, age 47, make too much for subsidies, the "Anthem Bronze" individual plan would be $230/mo for me (not bad but) .... a $6,000 deductible and a 60% co-pay. There's no way in HELL I am buying this, since, short of getting hit by a bus & having a heart attack, a coma and organ failure all at the same time, I'm never going to come near that deductible. Oh, and I don't need maternity or pediatric dental, either.

You either have to go to the exchange or get a better policy that will cover things you will never need.

They are saying Obama lied when he said if you like your plan you can keep it. So far, nobody qualifies for a subsidy or the subsidy will not offset the huge increases.

Im out of work due to needing a surgery, and dont have insurance. And since my income is too LOW to qualify for subsidies, I dont get shit. I get to hold my breath and wait to see if my state expands medicaid, which it has not done.

Some are trying to defend it.

We're supposed to be liberal Democrats on this site. The selfishness on a Democratic site is disheartening. This is part and parcel of living in a society where we have some sense of responsibility for others outside of ourselves. No man is an island, etc. etc. I am a senior whose children are grown and in their 40's and I don't whine and moan about paying taxes for public schools. Someone paid taxes for my children to go to school. When I was younger I didn't whine and moan about paying Medicare and Social Security taxes when my senior years were far off in the distance. It's part of the social contract that we pool our resources to help each other out, and I always thought that Democrats valued that. I've read so many posts both here and on Facebook that start with, "But this doesn't help me any." Then we complain about the "me" society.

Also, some of the liberals had no idea that a mandate meant that they had to purchase health insurance. Some other liberals explained it to them and they are not too happy knowing that they have to purchase it.

I hope he keeps it up and will continue to support Heritage. Can’t imagine what your world view is, not even close to mine.
