The Associated Press has declared Newark Mayor Cory Booker the winner in Wednesday's special U.S. Senate election.
Booker defeated former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan, a Tea Party Republican, to serve out the remainder of the late Frank Lautenberg’s term.
Although the race was close early on, Democrats were quick to declare Booker the winner. Only 40 minutes after polls closed at 8 p.m., the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was declaring victory. A short time later, state Sen. Barbara Buono, who is running against Governor Christie in the Nov. 5 election, offered her congratulations to Booker.
One poll had it at 6 points. Lonegan’s internal poll had it at 3! They could have altered that one, though, to get out the vote.
Losing isn't everything and maybe we can someday get back to the place where an American citizen is represented whether the elected official was their choice or not.
Never said I would never return. I’m thinking it will a few more years of Obama, 8 years of Hillary and 8 years of Jeb Bush in the White House. After that, Americans might realize that enough is enough and so it will be time for me to return.
I commend Lonegan for putting up a good fight, but there wasn’t a chance in hell that he was ever going to win this race. Booker outspent him by a wide margin ... and to be frank about it, if running an smart, ugly conservative with glasses was a recipe for success then Steve Forbes would be serving about his seventh term in Washington in various Federal offices including the White House.
She’s still alive.
I bet they would not elect Ben Carson, Thomas Sowell, or West, or Cain.
Looks like Lonegan got within 11%. With no national support. He can win this race next year if he gets the support.

OH please. The reason we want republicans to win elections is to represent “conservative” values, against the wishes of the liberals in their district.
But after awhile the only thing people will notice is that the bear doesn't dance particularly well.

This is NJ. Corruption by a Democrat is a resume' enhancement.

With Booker running as an incumbent in Washington next year in a "normal" election cycle, Lonegan would lose by a wide margin if he runs again.
NJ used to be a red state. Part of the problem is that NJ over the last couple of decades has become a cheaper (not cheap, but cheaper) alternative for Manhattanites who move here and bring their politics with them. That and we do have a very serious immigration problem. The immigration problem will never get better here, but as things get more expensive and the state becomes less attractive to New Yorkers we will see things change somewhat. Note that I did say somewhat. But there is conservatism here. I mentioned before that we have people here who live conservative lives but have been groomed not to vote that way. We need to reach those people.
That’s what I’m saying. But they’re not liberals. They’re democrats because their parents told them that they’re democrats. But still, NJ was once a red state. If today’s election was held three or four years ago it would not have been this close. And NJ is not NY. We need to do a better job of reaching out to people here, and I am doing my part to help in that department.
That's true for a lot of states. Before the spawn of the hippies took over the country.
That brings up an interesting point: If Steve Lonegan, who is legally blind, was a liberal democrat there would have been an absolute love-fest going on in the media. Probably a documentary about his great courage. Definitely public support from all kinds of groups. But because he’s a conservative, nothing.
I no longer live in the great Garden State, so I sent him some money.
I was proud to do so.
It was less than a year ago when the RINO Mitt Romney could only manage 40% of the vote.
I think there's a clear lesson there.
