France to boost troops in Central African Republic as crisis deepens

France will boost its military presence in the Central African Republic by the end of the year to stop the country from spiralling out of control, the French foreign minister has said.

"President Hollande we want your help!" read one banner as locals in Bangui, the capital, welcomed Laurent Fabius at the weekend.

The country has been in turmoil since mostly Muslim Seleka rebels ousted President François Bozizé in the predominantly Christian country in March. It now teeters on the brink of increased sectarian violence, malnutrition and a collapse of state rule.

...

France has long been seen by many in the Central African Republic as meddling in its affairs after independence in 1960. It has intervened several times in the past, for example when it supported Bozizé in 2006 against northern rebels.

But official French policy has employed a more hands-off stance in such conflicts. Paris is all the more reluctant to be left to deal with another African hotspot after it felt allies such as the US were hesitant to support it in Mali.

Nonetheless, its 400-strong contingent guard the airport and patrol districts where French interests lie, a move that has deterred potential looters.

Central African Republic is approximately 50% Christian and 15% Muslim, which makes the sudden seizure of power by the Muslim rebels quite suprising. The rebels swept into the capitol deftly avoiding fighting the French and over running the South African soldiers who were basically acting as body guards for the former President.

Fresh off their newly revived adventurism in Mali the French are now gearing up in CAR. What do CAR and Mali have in common other than being former French colonies? Uranium.

How I this a crisis for France?

They’d be better off dealing with the Muslim crisis in their own cities.

Lots of minerals; lots of French business interests. Big businesses that the government listens to. It was only a couple of years ago the French got UN permission to overthrow the elected government of Ivory Coast and put in a Muslim replacement who was much more inclined to their interests. Last year it was saving a friendly government in Mali on the verge of collapse. Now it's the Central African Republic.

Yeah, Hollande would be a shoo in for the big Nobel if he wasn’t in Obama’s shadow so much.

I’m all in favor of their helping the Christian majority, even if they’re doing it to ensure access to the uranium.

It’s hardly surprising that Hussein Obama prefers the Muslim terrorists.

Frankly, what I can’t understand is what on earth possessed the French to support the war against Kaddafi. If they thought they would ensure their access to oil that way, they were sadly mistaken.

Ironic, isn't it? "No blood for oil!" but we bombed Libya clean into Al Qaeda's arms to get the spigot turned back on for the EU. And now oil production in Libya has dropped to zero as the country pluges towards failed state status.

They speak French. Dump 8 million Haitians on the country with $100/mo welfare checks. The u.s. can then empty it’s prisons and give the western half of the island to the Dominican Republic. Problem(s)solved.

I know it isn’t politically correct to ask, but can anybody name a single country in Africa which is better governed now than when the European colonial powers were running it?

Give me some time, I'm still thinking.

The Democratic Republic of Congo. Shocking, right? With all the bloodshed, etc., this pales in comparison to what King Leopold did to the country.

Another place could be Kenya or Tanzania.
