One pocket of internal Republican opposition focused on Boehner’s plan to slash government contribution to health insurance for Capitol Hill aides. Boehner and his top lieutenants had already proposed that lawmakers, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and political appointees at executive-branch agencies should lose the subsidy. But when Boehner expanded that ban to thousands of Hill staffers, a solid bloc of GOP lawmakers told Boehner they would oppose the bill.
Boehner still tried to press on.
Another rebellious faction believes repealing the medical-device tax was nothing but a giveaway to corporate America, not a part of Obamacare that should be erased.
And then there were the conservatives, who looked at Boehner, Cantor, and McCarthy’s plan, didn’t see any serious attempt to defund or repeal Obamacare, and took a pass. Several lawmakers in this group, sources say, were conservative House Republican freshmen.
By around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Boehner and his Republican leadership team decided enough was enough. They called off a Rules Committee meeting and decided that they would forgo a floor vote. There was even staff-level talk of a one-week debt ceiling bill to avoid default.
GOP lawmakers and aides, who spent hours in meetings with Boehner Tuesday, were shocked to see him upbeat as his House Republican Conference crumbled around him.
Boehner’s options, at this point, seem slim. Reid and McConnell were on the verge of a deal Tuesday night to lift the debt ceiling until Feb. 7, reopen government until Jan. 15 and create a budget conference committee that would be required to report results by Dec. 13. Treasury could extend the debt ceiling using extraordinary measures. Health and Human Services would be required to certify the income of those receiving subsidies under Obamacare.

Translation: we didn’t allow him to cave. And now he has to get the votes of his leadership and the democrats. He’s done and he knows it.

Boner’s gonna need ‘Rat support in the House as the real conservatives and tons of faux conservatives dive for cover on this vote.
If they could maybe give the staffers a reduced subsidy, like 50% instead of 75% - something akin to what many employers do. Staffers do more work than Congress. But Congress, the Courts, and the Executives who enrich themselves at the expense of taxpayers with cronies and inside trading: they should be fined, jailed, and forced to receive Zero Care.
I think Boehner has reached the acceptance stage. He knows there's no painless way out for him so he has resigned himself to the fact that this is his last term. The relief that the pain will soon be over is what brings the smile.

I don’t understand why McCain isn’t facing a recall, like the would-be gun grabbers in Colorado did-is his embarrassing pandering what folks in Arizona really want, or does AZ law not permit that he be removed other than in a regular election?
Cruz could have stopped this. ANY senator could have. Has Cruz joined the RINOs?
I think he has no intention to leave. I believe the knowledge that he could have a stiff drink after caving is why he was smiling.

He could have played the Senate rules to drag the whole thing out as long as possible. He didn’t. He stood aside and let the debt ceiling get raised. He is a coward.
I see newbie that the DU faction is active today.
The only plan Boehner has and had is to side with the Libs. He never intended to side with the people.
