EBT Food stamps system experiencing glitches in Michigan, other states

DETROIT - The Local 4 newsroom has been flooded with calls and emails from people reporting problems with their Michigan EBT Food stamp card.

Viewers say they attempted to use their Bridge Card but the system is not working and they are left unable to purchase groceries.

Local 4 contacted the Michigan Department of Human Services; a spokesperson says the issue with client cards is not on the DHS end.

The spokesperson says the issues are believed to stem from a system update on the retailer's side. DHS says the issues are widespread but say they are expecting to correct the problem quickly.

Similar issues have been reported in other states.

Oklahoma's KFOR News Channel 4 reports the system failure is the result of a power outage at a Xerox facility. Xerox is the vendor for the EBT systems for many states.

The issue is not related to the government shutdown as many callers have feared.

There was an article in one of the MI papers about a year ago about a guy in Detoilet that made extra money trapping and selling raccoon and opossums.

I have no problem cutting off that system for a few years and making people
actually go to the Gov office to sign for the food stamps. It should never

Here’s the sad part - can you imagine her working? Good grief - she’d probably get a job at the DMV.

Mississippi and Louisiana supposedly affected by this as well—saw from a news article linked by a Facebook friend that this is affecting EBT cards in seventeen states right now, but the vendor “expects to have it resolved shortly.”

I don’t think that is it. It seems credit or debit cards at stores were doing some kind of work in their systems. They keep updating the systems making everything stupid.

Although I usually pay by credit card, this is why I always keep enough cash on me to pay for stuff if my card stops working.
