Again, as with the admiral, I don’t think this has much to do with der Fuehrer getting rid of generals. Back in the 70s and 80s breakdowns in Nuclear Surety like the ones that have happened over the last couple of years would have resulted in SAC booting these generals even more quickly than they have this guy.

All of us crew members and wing staff knew for sure that Curtis Lemay himself might come out of retirement to personally rip our gonads off if we screwed up that badly.

We’re talking Nuclear Safety here, not a gambling problem or pinching female lieutenants on the ass. This general was not ensuring the personal attention to training and controls (and sense of paranoia) that these operations require. He wasn’t up to the responsibilities of the job.
