Ryan Pushing Means Testing for SS Benefits?
10/9/13 | Originalbuckeye

I just heard my Conservative radio hosts discussing what is being put on the table by the Republicans in the House. They said Ryan is pushing means testing for SS benefits.

Social Security is a massive suicide pact and there is no stopping it. If we stopped issuing new cards today, dropped everyone from the rolls who has not paid into the system yet and allowed no one else to sign up for Social Security Disability it would still bankrupt the system, just faster. So many Americans from every end of the political spectrum are absolutely dependent on the system that any politician who tried to change it will get pilloried, as is happening on this thread. It's a regressive tax that has already been spent. Might as well ask for your income taxes, sales taxes and property taxes back. Ain't gonna happen.

Want to change the system? Fine. Make everyone, not just those who earn less than $120,000 a year, pay 15%. See if that flies.

Unfortunately, there is case law ruling that you are not entitled to Social Security.
Our money has been spent, and they don’t owe us a dime...

Social Security is ALREADY “means tested” through a tax on SS benefits.

Medicare is ALREADY means tested, with higher part B and Part D premiums, for single taxpayers above $87K and married couples over $117K.

Even if contributions were untouched, they aren’t large enough to pay off the promised benefits.

I think we’re going to go into the financial pit of Argentina, default on our debt, have the government attempt to confiscate savings (401Ks, Bank Accounts), and a civil war in the streets.

But until then, I have a lovely woman to whom I go home every night.

I’ve fought for conservatism before, now, and will in the future.

But I have a good life while the country is heading directly into chaos.

Yes, because everyone who can find a green card or a leg injury can suck out SSI....again, wealth re-distribution and no adjustment to the age since 1934.

I have over $150K contributed already (I’m 44). It’s done.

If I know I’m not getting any, why pay into it?

You and I both know why we pay into it: because we’ll go to jail if we don’t.

So - I can’t have my own money unless some traitorous politico deems that I deserve it?

Social security is only a “benefit” if you get disability or one of the other handout programs sapping SS. If you paid into it your whole life, and get it back when you are old with the pathetic 2% interest the gov. calculates it is a joke to say it is a “benefit.”

Any means testing for returning someone’s social security is simply theft. Cut off the free loaders first and then we’ll talk.

You haven’t “put” a damn cent into Social Security. You’ve just paid an additional income tax called FICA that has gone to then-current recipients, with no real promise of any future benefits to yourself.

How about regular drug testing for Welfare, Food Stamp, Section 8, and Social Security Disability ?

Any means testing for returning someone’s social security is simply theft.

Kinda like when they tax part of your SS retirement benefits.

That your wealthy parents were forced to pay into a government retirement program under false pretenses is obscene.

>> save in a way that is below the radar... like money in mattresses.

Or buying stuff that holds its value +/-. I’m betting on tractors and implements myself. For someone who knows antiques or collectibles that might work too. Firearms look like a good bet.

You *do* have to know what you’re doing or you won’t really be saving. ;-)

And there’s always the risk of various kinds of loss.

its not an earned benefit, baby

once it’s means-tested, it’s just another tax

If it’s means tested, it’s welfare. I would find it shockingly immoral to change the rules on those who are retired or who are approaching retirement. Now, if they offered to buy me out by returning my money that I paid in, I would take that in a heartbeat. I’d also like to see the eligibility age raised (gradually, and for those more than 10 (15?) years from retirement), to reduce the demand on the system. I can’t see the far left agreeing to either of the proposals that I like. They hate fairness and common sense.
