Early snow kills thousands of cattle in SD

A record-breaking storm that dumped 4 feet of snow in parts of western South Dakota left ranchers dealing with heavy losses, in some cases perhaps up to half their herds, as they assess how many of their cattle died during the unseasonably early blizzard.

Meanwhile, utility companies were working to restore power to tens of thousands of people still without electricity Monday after the weekend storm that was part of a powerful weather system that also buried parts of Wyoming and Colorado with snow and produced destructive tornadoes in Nebraska and Iowa. At least four deaths were attributed to the weather, including a South Dakota man who collapsed while cleaning snow off his roof. …

Life it tough? Well, you fight the weather, not the criminals. You CAN always go to Florida for a small vacation.

Besides, IT'S WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. You WANT the tough life.

City slickers die of the cold too. The cold doesn't ask where someone is from. I lived in Chicago when I was a little girl. Doesn't get much colder than Chicago. I remember very little about Chicago...but I remember the cold.

Besides, a phone call might not be the answer for someone who has gotten in a real jam. Also, phones sometimes fail. There is no pat answer. Life can be JUST AS TOUGH for someone NOT living on the ranch in the middle of the tundra plains.

“Dude, Rapid City is now where near the state of SD. You folks are full of it”

You might want to think before you post.

I think animals are great predictors of weather. Our 13 year-old Siberian Husky has grown the heaviest coat I’ve ever seen on her. During this week’s blizzard, she’s really needed it.

If the only cold you’ve been exposed to is Chicago then you haven’t a clue what cold is in the Dakota’s and Wyoming areas..... Oh that is too funny to even compare!....

The folks didn't believe the forecasters and models? Why not?
Isn't it their business to forecast with reliable models?
Hmmmm, something's not right here. Oh well, not my problem. There is ALWAYS enough food. MOST of us Americans won't be going hungry in the near future. I sure won't.

Hmmm, I think I'll go have some grapes. I wonder where they're from.

//With all the environmental A-holes wanting public handouts at everyone’s expensive makes me leary.//

And you put ranchers in that category? Not even close.

You are still a troll and a stupid one at that.

No disrespect intended.

No one can be expected to understand what others may go through or be an expert on everything. What is really annoying is so many think they are smarter than the ranchers and have no clue. I have never thought I was an expert on things I know nothing about so not sure why many others do. I would not dream of telling posters here what they should or could do with their business in case of a disaster- yet they for some reason feel qualified to judge ranchers as if they know better when most know nothing at all about ranching.

It is heart breaking to see someone come in and say such shameful things about these people. Because these people give their lives to bring food to the table of the city folk in this country. These are not people asking for handouts, just articles pointing out the reality of what they are dealing with. But should we help them, you bet. Or that milk, cheese, meat that you buy at the store will become terribly expensive or not be there at all.

“Lonesome Dove” is one of my favorite books. Rarely does a movie equal the book. This is an exception.
