On the seventh day of the shutdown, President Obama called on House Republican leaders Monday to allow a vote immediately on a short-term measure to reopen government operations.
Mr. Obama said he strongly suspects there are enough votes in the House to reopen the government today.
The truth of the matter is, there are enough Republican and Democratic votes in the House of Representatives right now to end this shutdown immediately with no partisan strings attached, Mr. Obama said during a surprise visit to FEMA headquarters in the district. The House should hold that vote today.
The president said he is happy to talk to Republicans about budget issues, but not under threat of a shutdown or a government default.
Were not going to establish that pattern, Mr. Obama said, urging the GOP to move beyond this manufactured crisis.
Speaker John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, has said there are not enough votes in the House to pass a clean resolution to reopen the government temporarily. He said Democrats must accept changes to Obamacare before Republicans will agree to a budget deal.
Providing fairness to the American people, under Obamacare, is all were asking for, he said.
Mr. Obama dared Mr. Boehner to hold a vote.

Yeah sure, he wants to get back to the links, he is having withdrawals.....knows it would poll badly if he showed up at Andrews for a round.
I think the next step should be to pass single topic CRs WITH a debt ceiling increase to cover that amount of funding. This would make the whole Obama voted against veterans and orphans good for a second trip around the track as well as makes the democrats own the default issue.
The GOP should then start referring to those bills as the clean national parks bill, the clean veterans bill, the clean NIH bill and ask why the Dems won’t take what they asked for.
Is he drawing another red line?
Mr Obama has manufactured this crisis, not the House GOP.
A President may submit a budget, but no House of Representatives is obligated to rubber stamp it and ALL spending authority for the federal government orginates in the House, NOT the President or the Senate.
Obama’s use of the phrase “manufcatured crisis” suggests that the House of Representatives is in some fashion obligated to give him the budget he wants, or else!!! No, they are not.
Obama and Reid for years have not allowed a full annual federal budget and spending allocation process, beginning with the House and proceeding from there to take place, depending as they have every year since 2010 with delays by Reid - at Obama’s bidding - to manufacture a crisis which Obama and Reid then claim can only be met - in order to allow spending to continue WITHOUT complete budget allocations - with a raise in the national debt limit (which simply avoids for another year any necessity for Obama to compromise on anything.
John Boehner are you listening????
When will you expose the lie of Obama’s manufactured crisis??? It is his, not yours.
“O” really does NOT know how this stuff works, does he?
“Stand tough, Boehner. The citizens are behind you.”
Ditto! Tell the boy king to go pound sand.
He “demands”?!
Or he’ll stamp his feet? Hold his breath until his lips turn purple?
Feck him!
It is a good opportunity to pivot. The Dems are desperate.
Defund EPA. I’m loving the shutdown, all those EPA workers not working means they’re not harassing ppl
Net, net, net we don’t have the votes to undo Obamacare. Let it die of its own weight. Now is a good time to pivot, not cave and not right away, but pivot.
We win via the sequester in January and we’ve already got Dems to agree to a lower spending budget. We’re winning, but it is naïve to think we’ll do it in one budget season holding no veto proof majorities.
You are a steely-eyed missile man.
“Quick, save me! Obama pleads” should be the headline.
Gee, wonder why he doesn’t demand Harry Reid let the senate vote on the funding bills the House sends them?
My Response would be: “First Mr. President I am the Speaker of the House, You are President. If you remember your High School Government Classes, there is a difference. Each has their Responsibilities and Authority. I can’t Attempt to Order a Country Bombed like Say Syria. You Can’t call a vote In the House. Try as you might, you are limited to the Power of the Executive Branch By The US Constitution.
Second: The House has voted many times on funding for different departments and programs that has passed and has been sent to the Senate. Where Your best Friend Harry Reid, who doesn’t care about Kids being treated For Cancer has refused to bring ANY of that Legislation up for a vote. Perhaps instead of misleading the public, you should spend your time explaining why You have ordered National Monuments Closed to 90 WWII Vets, shut Down the National Amber Alert Website, Kicked people out of their Homes and shut down their Businesses while allowing Amnesty Proponents to assemble on those same Grounds. Oh and one other thing, Please explain why your Promise that “If you like your doctor you can keep them and you’ll save 2,500 dollars is being proven false repeatedly all over this Country when The American Public attempt to register for your Healthcare Insurance Law.”
But why make our ‘vulnerables’ vote on his bill yet let Harry Reid protect his ‘vulnerables’ from voting on the House bills?
Heck, have a “high noon” showdown= we vote on the Senate bill, and the Senate votes on ours at the same time.
We’d win.
Actually, we agree. Making this about obastardcare was a mistake I think. I said all along that the pain of the monstrosity has to be maximized. People will only learn lessons if there are consequences to actions. Sadly, of the carrot or stick, the stick works best.
I have been wondering how the correction can be made from the wrong cause, defunding obastardcare, to the right cause... trying to manage the budget and stiffle spending. It has to be done in stages just like bringing down a junkie off of drugs.
Pivot to issues of spending, if it can be done properly somehow by the repubs, is the thing to do. Obastardcare is an unsustainable expense for all but it needs to become an example of the price of government that is too big. A battle cry?
Boehere should dare Obama to show a birth certificate and college transcripts.
With DOD employees back to work today, only 8 to 10% of Federal Government shutdown. They need to see this out to,the end.
