ATF tries to block whistleblowing agent’s ‘Fast and Furious’ book
The Washington Times ^ | 10/13/13 | John Solomon

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is blocking the main whistleblower in the Fast and Furious case from publishing a book for pay, claiming his retelling of the Mexico “gun-walking” scandal will hurt morale inside the embattled law enforcement agency, according to documents obtained by The Washington Times.

ATF’s dispute with Special Agent John Dodson is setting up a First Amendment showdown that is poised to bring together liberal groups like the American Civil Liberties Union and conservatives in Congress who have championed Mr. Dodson’s protection as a whistleblower.

The ACLU is slated to become involved in the case Monday, informing ATF it is representing Mr. Dodson and filing a formal protest to the decision to reject his request to publish the already written book, sources told The Times, speaking only on the condition of anonymity.

The battle also could have repercussions on Capitol Hill, where the two lead investigators who helped uncover the Fast and Furious scandal, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell E. Issa, Calif. Republican, had written a foreword to the book, the sources said.

ATF officials declined Sunday night to discuss Mr. Dodson’s specific matter, citing personnel privacy. But the officials said it was possible for an agent to be rejected for publishing a book for pay but get permission to publish it for free. No manuscript for any Fast and Furious book has received approval for unpaid publication, however, the officials said.

The BATFE should just hold a going out of business sale and then call it quits.

...claiming his retelling of the Mexico “gun-walking” scandal will hurt morale inside the embattled law enforcement agency...

So, it's against the law to "hurt morale"? Are they even trying to claim the book is untruthful?

So how soon will we be sending copies of prohibited books to each other, at the threat of harsh punishment if caught? We know exactly how it's done, because it was done this way in USSR.

We are close. They do not even claim that anything in the book is false.

If they can prohibit anything because it might ‘hurt morale’, someone needs to take our boyKing in hand and prohibit him. He is determined to destroy morale in the entire country. I am reminded of the phrase ‘the daily beatings will continue until morale improves’. He seems to relish hurting patriotic Americans.

Was I naïve, or did we lose it all in less than 20 years?

If I’m gonna’ live out my days in a totalitarian hellhole, I’ll take Cuba over the USSA. Beautiful women, cool cars, warm weather. And the faint hope of freedom.

IBTICBIAWTACLU

(In before the “I can’t believe I agree with the ACLU!” brigade)

We should leave politics to the lefties and try to reform the ACLU. They’re on our side more & more often. We should be allies.

I really wish that conservatives would be able to outgrow the knee-jerk hatred of the ACLU (and probably likewise). Many times, they are on the same side. Find the areas of agreement before looking for the disagreements.

I would like someone to explain how anything - anything - that this particular agency does could be considered “classified”.

I believe that this is a preemptive strike against the flood of tell-all books that are no doubt being written for publication in 2017. The Dems are broke and there won’t be enough money to pay everyone off and without being in power, no cushy jobs to pass out. And, the world has room for only so many talking heads.

It is going to be like giving laxatives to a rhinoceros with a bad combination of Monezuma’s revenge AND constipation.

Ah, it would hurt their MORALE, yes.

I wonder how it feels to have your biz raided for no reason, all your property seized, and your name tarnished..? That’s after they break into your house, smashing everything, pointing guns at your head, and then imprisoning you.

And they do that to your wife and your child, also.

Then they say you’ll get seperate trials and they hold you incommunicado.

Or....I wonder how morale is if they kill your son, and shoot your wife in the head as she holds your baby..? That probably hurts your feelings pretty badly, I’d say. And then they fly over your cabin with a huge fuel bladder, threatening to burn the whole place to a crisp...

Or...maybe they DO burn your place to a crisp, along with almost 100 other people inside, including many kids, eh? Cuz your brand of Christianity sort of weirds them out...

I’d bet that would really, REALLY hurt your morale, right?

This report SOUNDS like a joke, but against all reason they really do take their feelings quite seriously.

Excellent post, originalbuckeye. Sadly, this whole story about government attempting to block this ATF's agent book is very much consistent with the policies of this neo-totalitarian administration,
