Families throw off the cones at Badlands National Park in South Dakota

Tax-paying, hard-working families aren’t letting White House shutdown politics stop them from enjoying America’s beauty. They’re defying the orange cones at Mount Rushmore. They’re breaching the barrycades at Zion National Park. And now, the Badlands of South Dakota.

Noelle Bruno tweets that she and her family made it through Mount Rushmore despite the White House obstacles:

you want to know the really gay thing about this?

when parks don’t have people manning the gates, people self-pay and dropoff any entrance fee into a box by the front entrance.

you don’t need anyone there. more than half the time we go to parks there’s nobody around.

I’m another old lady. This brought tears to my eyes. And I, of all people, should have remembered this quote from Adams. Thank you.

Well they haven`t, not yet! Was just there this morning and its still "guerrilla opened". Now mind you I didn`t go that way but a older couple said they started by Brecksville Reservation, parking in the Metro-Parks, and I know its open to Szalays Farm from Peninsula, which I hiked. Another couple said they took it all the way to Merriman Valley.

It was raining all weekend but I`m going to do my usual ride from Peninsula to Locke 3 in Downtown Akron, perhaps Monday or Tuesday, weather permitting. I hate riding the trail when its wet because of the gritty splash from the berm gravel surface, what a mess it makes.

You can’t be in favor of the government shutdown and at the same time demand that the federal parks stay open.

Sure you can. You see the fedgov have very little to do with the parks except collecting the fees from the private businesses and state employees that run the parks.

So the idea that the parks should be closed is... well the only word is stupid.

I don't ride the trail anymore...I gave up cycling because the sidewalks are so spectacular around here and my energetic dog likes to take me on lots of walks.

With this weather, it's been the perfect summer and autumn to enjoy the bike path. When I did ride, I'd park at the visitor's station in Valley View and ride north. I like the tarred roads in the metroparks part of the trail. Have to see it to believe it, don't you? A bike trail with two suspension bridges over roads just south of the Cleveland city line.

I prefer the Brecksville to Locke 3 ride. Its mostly forested and with some beautiful views of the river, smells a bit "rivery" at times but its especially lovely this time of the year!

And there`s still plenty of places to stop and buy refreshments, Boston Store by Boston Township, Peninsula`s Winking Lizard and Fishers Cafe, Szalay`s Farm-stand, love the occassional street performers there, and ton`s of places in the Valley, my favorite is Mariachi Coco`s-great nacho platter, and then the Locke 3 area and it`s pricier but nice lounges, oh and that peanut shop across from the Locke 3 venue, it's a great ride and workout, there and back.

Well, if they get lost or injured hiking around mount Rushmore they shouldn’t call the government for help. Some folks don’t seem to understand that the federal government is shutdown. I’m sure they’ll have a chance to visit the federal parks and monuments in the near future. But they shouldn’t insist in visiting right now.

Wow.

What federal agency do you work for?

I'm quite familiar with Woody Guthrie, and I assumed the sarcasm tag was implicit. :)

There's a memorial to the late commie bastard within a good morning walk from my house, and all the local commies and people associated with them (poofters, IOW, but far be it from me to say it) think he was just fabulous.

All the more reason it's fun to reference him when dealing with today's commies.

His son is a pr!ck too, btw.

Its amazing how they can have guards at parks and memorials but the border between the USA and mexico is wide open.

You're right Yorlik...

I looked up Arlo Guthrie; the Wikipedia cite is VERY sympathetic to Arlo & his leftie views; it’s like he’s frozen in time in the late 60’s & that’s good according to them. The lemon never falls far from the tree.

Anyway, the NPS sez they will arrest or fine anyone who even pauses to take photos of Mt. Rushmore.

I wonder what the charges will be. We are now living in the USSA.

It is thus time for a dozen-or-so families to pause to take photos of Mount Rushmore.

And be arrested...for what?

The NPS has invited civil disobedience. And we can out-Alinsky the feds!

Yup. Arlo is an asshat as well. He lived about 30 miles south of us when we were still in FL and everybody that interfaced with him said he was/is an asshat.

It was the first thing that sprang to mind after I read BarnacleCenturian’s comment.

I’m sure that you would have thought of it on your own, too.

But it’s nice that you got a memory jog about the quote. It is certainly profound.

You guys gave me an idea:

DUmmie FUnnies 10-07-13 ("This Land's Not Your Land": DUmmies down with Obama's park shutdown)

THIS LAND'S NOT YOUR LAND
Tune: "This Land Is Your Land"
As sung by King Obama

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

If you go driving an interstate highway
And see an orange cone, you'll do it my way
You will obey me and not go forward
This land's not made for you to see

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

You'll want to travel and go to Mount Rushmore
But at Rapid City, you won't go much more
Guards will surround you, their voices sounding:
This land's not made for you to see

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

If you oppose me, I'll make you suffer
Come near memorials, I'll put up a buffer
I am Obama, I am your land lord
This land's not made for you to see

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

If you go looking, you'll see a sign there
And on the sign it says: "There's No Trespassing"
And on the other side: "No Looking or Nothing!"
Both sides were made for you to see

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

At the Redwood Forest, in the land of the Canyons
By the Gulfstream Waters, you'll see my minions
As they stand there guarding, you'll stand there wond'ring:
Is this land safe for me to see?

This land's not your land, this land is my land
Shut down or open, it comes from my hand
From Barack Obama to the bitter clingers:
This land's not made for you to see

No one can stop me, my mind is made up
As I go putting my Barrycades up
Nobody living can make me give your land back
This land's not made for you to see

New voices:

But King Obama, this land is our land
So shut your piehole, you can go pound sand
From the bitter clingers to Barack Obama:
This land was founded to be free

This land ain't your land, this land is our land
So shut your piehole, you can go pound sand
From the bitter clingers to Barack Obama:
This land was founded to be free
