I was a fired up and crazy teenager back then, listening to the treaty debate in the Senate on National Public Radio-there was no C SPAN.

I was fired up enough to wear a black armband to school when the treaty passed.

Thanks smoothsailing. Richard A. Viguerie:
But the truth is, while conservatives lost the Senate vote to save the Panama Canal, 70% of the American people agreed with us. And over the next two elections (1978 and 1980) 21 senators who voted on the Panama Canal Treaty lost in a primary or general election. Of those 21 senators, 20 voted with Jimmy Carter and against the conservatives. Many old-time liberals in the Senate such as George McGovern, Frank Church, Tom McIntyre, Dick Clark, and liberal Republican Clifford Case (in a primary) were defeated.
And the libtard partisan media shills were 100 percent against the removal of Manuel Noriega.

Love palindromes. Have you ever seen Weird Al’s send up of that Bob Dylan song? Very funny!

I, man, am regal a German am I
Never odd or even
If I had a hi-fi
Madam, I’m Adam
Too hot to hoot
No lemons, no melon
Too bad I hid a boot
Lisa Bonet ate no basil
Warsaw was raw
Was it a car or a cat I saw?

Rise to vote, sir
Do geese see God?
“Do nine men interpret?” “Nine men,” I nod
Rats live on no evil star
Won’t lovers revolt now?
Race fast, safe car
Pa’s a sap
Ma is as selfless as I am
May a moody baby doom a yam?

Ah Satan sees Natasha
No devil lived on
Lonely Tylenol
Not a banana baton
No “x” in “Nixon”
O, stone, be not so
O Geronimo, no minor ego
“Naomi”, I moan
“A Toyota’s a Toyota”
A dog, a panic in a pagoda

Oh, no! Don Ho!
Nurse, I spy gypsies — run!
Senile felines
Now I see bees I won
UFO tofu
We panic in a pew
Oozy rat in a sanitary zoo
God! A red nugget! A fat egg under a dog!
Go hang a salami, I’m a lasagna hog

If I remember correctly it passed the senate by one vote. Sen Dale Bumpers from Arkansas said something like “I know the people of my state are against this. But I think I know a little more than they do.” He basically said the Arkansas voters were stupid. They re-elected him so he was right.

Viguerie also fails to mention Gerald Ford supported the canal surrender. He could have gone back furthur. Not making the news is the closing of the open air Viet Nam War Memorial and this episode;

The four passenger helicopter already overloaded with eight just barely lifting off its roof top heli-pad. Attached to its steel tube runner type landing gear below the fuselage were about a dozen more desperate people clinging to the gear . As the craft struggles to get airborne. it lurches skyward as one of those clinging to the steel tubes used as landing gear lets go. Falling to a death some 35 feet down to the refugee crowded lamding pad atop the Saigon American Embassy roof..

They were fleeing South Viet Nam through its closed US embassy because American support was withdrawn and denied .Leaving its army running out of ammo and conviction. Sold out by an American congress controled ironically by Democrats that decided to shed its support for a democratic form of government to what became a US ward for a socialist/communist replacement . It was a harbinger of what that political party will bring to the US 50 years later.

Because of Obamacare most recalling of defunding\ governemnt shutdowns simply goes back to Gingrich’s time when he was Speaker. This earlier defunding/ government shutdown had profound implications where hundreds of thousands died because of it. Like the constitutional constrains on central government. That abandonment of Viet Nam is hardly if ever mentioned or discussed in classrooms despite American humiliation could be demonstrated in that film clip described in this articles lead paragraph.. Because it was created by the Democrat party responding to the socialist/communist radicals that had taken over the “liberal arts eduicational industry” and were slowly taking that party over as well..

Not only did we lose a war because of it. But those same university socialist educators which encouraged this defunding , and dis-honoring the of the 58,000 deaths of our military. Also encouraged their charges to use humiliation such as calling retuning servicemen “baby killers” (only later to kill their own) and spitting in their faces. Their educational products are now on their own, borrowing a military term, R&R . Running and Ruining destroying this country . For this time the same group are now in control of that political party.

Professor William Ayers is proud of his protege....

It is also well worth remembering that Reagan and the incoming conservatives did nothing to reverse the Panama Canal treaty after they got elected. Don’t put too much faith in any politicians.

LOL!!!  Carter had already given millions to Panama to take the canal and Carter had already fired thousands of American canal workers.  You wanted Reagan to beg Panama to give the money back and beg all the workers to trust the US gov't and all go back to Mangoland again?  Look, you can't unscramble an omelet.

Wow! That went right over your head didn't it? The point is Regan and company campaigned on the issue, then did nothing about it after they got elected. The article is claiming that Obamacare is the new Panama Canal issue because Republicans are campaigning on it and winning. Let's hope it's not a new Panama Canal issue. I'd like to see Obamacare actually get repealed.

Regan and company campaigned on the issue, then did nothing about it after they got elected.

While we got different opinions on what we want, we're stuck with the same facts --even when the facts one person sees aren't what the other's looking at.

Let's get together on what happened.  The Republicans were handed a pull-out in progress and a Panama flag already flying over what once had been a US Canal Zone.  Reagan & Co. proceeded with a full scale invasion putting the Panama's head of state in a US prison  The 'do-nothing' part happened later when Carter's successor presided over the final shut-down.

A President Ted Cruz would have the authority to sign a bill abrogating Obamacare, but his authority would not include jurisdiction outside the US.

What do we have here? A heart bleeding for Noriega, of all people?

The CIA put Noriega into power and supported him while turning a blind eye to his enormous drug trafficking. When he got too far off the reservation, the CIA and US military took him out. Excellent account of the whole business in In the Time of the Tyrants: Panama 1968-1990 by Koster and Sanchez.

Hell's bells, Pete: you were here on the ground at the time and you know this stuff. Noriega was as big a dirtbag as Uncle Sam has ever supported. It's only fitting that Uncle finally (far too late) took his sorry ass out.

Loved his 'torture'. Being forced to listen repeatedly to 'You Light Up My Life' and 'Sugar, Sugar' while holing up in the Nuncio. Whoever thought that little stunt up had quite the sense of humour! Worked, too, heh heh heh...

...'torture'.  Being forced to listen repeatedly to 'You Light Up My Life'...

Yeah, that psyops was effective.  Few people know how well it worked in Iraq too.  In fact, psyops chalked up the first Iraqi casualty at the beginning of the invasion; what happened was a bundle of surrender pamphlets failed to open/dispurse and the entire stack hit and killed an Iraqi soldier.

True story
