A certain shutdown narrative has become all-too-familiar: It is holding us back from gazing at the National Zoo’s pandas throughout the day and perusing the halls and walkways of our national museums and parks.
But for millions of the nations poor, the situation could soon be far more serious, and simply moving a gate or clicking on a link to another video won’t solve their problems.
Though many of the programs that provide assistance to needy families and individuals like food stamps, Medicaid, and Medicare will continue running during the shutdown, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is barely holding on.
The nearly $7 billion dollar program that provides access to food, formula, nutritional education, breast-feeding support, and health-care referrals to 9 million poor mothers, babies, and children is having to rely on $125 million in contingency funds from the USDA to continue operating throughout the month.
Douglas Greenaway, the president of the National WIC Association, a D.C. based nonprofit, calls the money a “sneeze” and warns that clinics will be forced to close their doors and end benefits if normal funding doesn’t resume by the end of the month....

A friend’s daughter (23 or so with 2 kids) is on Medicaid and went to the urgent care today to get treated for an ear infection.
She was told Medicaid was stopped - no warning and that if she wanted treatment she would have to pay upfront to enroll in Obamacare right at the urgent care.
I told my friend to send her to an ER because they have to treat everyone regardless of if they can pay. She called the one nearest their home and they said for her to enroll in Obamacare before showing up or she wouldn’t be seen.
The girl had barely any money so the mom paid for 3 months worth of Obamacare for the daughter on her debit card and off she went to the ER.
They have enough WIC money for 30 days. What crap.
We need to get all the illegals out of the system, then it would be easier to see what the issues are with our own poor and/or deadbeats. Illegals are overwhelming all of our social services and they are the elephant in the room when issues are discussed.

The shutdown might get them off their butts and start looking for work but there’s one big problem; there’s no work due to 0’s horrible economic policies, poor leadership, and Obamacare. You get the AntiChrist out of office and things will turnaround.

I guess interviews of sobbing young Hispanic females with 3 children and one on the way who haven’t received their EBT cards, HUD benefits, and WIC cards will be on all the MSM channels next as they hammer the evil Republicans for denying them their benefits which they and their boyfriends have never paid one dime of taxes on. Put things in the correct non-PC context and their house of cards will fall.

The only way to help those folks is to break Obama’s back by taking him and his democrats out of power.
Shut the entire country down and rebuild from the ashes. Compromising with democrats is what got us to where we are.
