Late last night, the White House cancelled the whole trip, sending Secretary of State John Kerry in Obama’s place instead:
President Obama has cancelled the rest of his trip to Asia next week, pulling out of summits in Indonesia and Brunei because of the ongoing government shutdown, the White House announced tonight.
“The president made this decision based on the difficulty in moving forward with foreign travel in the face of a shutdown, and his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a written statement. …
“The cancellation of this trip is another consequence of the House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government,” Carney said. “This completely avoidable shutdown is setting back our ability to create jobs through promotion of U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership and interests in the largest emerging region in the world. The president looks forward to continuing his work with our allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific and to returning to the region at a later date.
The White House could have gotten Obama out of the fray and onto the high-profile arena of global diplomacy. That would have elevated his status while making Congress look petty in comparison. Instead, Obama will sit in the White House and refuse to negotiate, which makes him look at least as petty as Congress, and undermine his credibility on leadership even further. Canceling the trip looks a lot more like a temper tantrum than the act of a statesman, either domestically or internationally.

He sure isn't President Bush.
In fact, he sure isn't an American.
This is a good thing. Every day that nobody in our house starts the car and leaves the property, money is saved.
So, if nobody in government goes anywhere or does anything for about 100 years in a row, our debt will disappear. Cool.
Instead of traveling, Lt John Kerry can skype with the leaders of other nations.
I am so sick and tired of that narritive that a vote is needed to reopen the government. The house has voted at least 3 times that I know of. The senate just needs to pass it and have the President sign it.

Correctamundo! Dictators world wide seldom leave their own secure jurisdictions during troubled times at least. Their insecurity is rampant.
Am I supposed to feel rage or something that he isn’t going to be able to spend another $100 million on his pleasure trip?
The only reason it was cancelled is because even his low information voters know that the government is shut down. he cannot afford getting more of them mad at him for vacationing if they think there is a threat to their aid.
If the President wants to lead, he can tell the Senate to approve the bill and sign it. He has gotten what he wants.
Now his behavior telegraphs to every world power how to play Obama like a fiddle. Just maneuver him into an extreme position you want him to draw a line, let him draw the line and act accordingly. He has now presented his decision making authority in a tightly wrapped little box.

If he leaves town, the public will know every time there is a self made crisis, he runs away.
