Iconic military cemeteries around the world where thousands of American soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars lay to rest were temporarily closed from Tuesday due to the US government shutdown.
A sign outside the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial, west of Paris, informed visitors of its closure. Due to the United States government shutdown, this site is closed to the public
But Suresnes isnt the only one. The move affects some 20 cemeteries in France, Belgium, Britain, Italy, Tunisia and Mexico which serve as the final resting place for troops who died in landmark campaigns such as the Normandy D-Day landings, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) said on its website.
Just how many US government employees are “running” these cemeteries? I would bet the care for these cemeteries has been jobbed out to French companies. This was planned by the White House. Don’t think that any of Michelle Obama’s staff have been sent home or the White House chef will be making hot dogs and Ramen soup.
And here we thought “Normandy was closed too!” was just a witty rejoinder.
We’re spending taxpayer dollars maintaining U.S. park facilities in France?
Our local cemeteries are open 24/7, and there are no people working there. Why would you CLOSE a cemetery?
The little poofter is trying to punish the dead.
Well remember a cemetery is a club med for them. That is how they get a lot of their voters =)
You are kidding me — we pay those cheese eaters to maintain the cemeteries of US military who gave their lives for their freedom.!!!
DOUBLE DOG DITTOS!!!
Well said!!
No, you aren't.
And on top of that, the WWII Memorial on the National Mall was constructed completely with private funds, and continued operation is funded by a trust fund created expressly for that purpose.
This is all political theater, designed to inflict pain. It's the equivalent of taking your ball and going home because your friends won't play by your rules.
Technically the cemeteries are US soil by treaty. Not sure who maintains them. Would be nice to see the French reopen them and provide any necessary security.
ping for: titled US shutdown closes iconic D-Day cemeteries in France
Hitler would be proud.
Bingo Justlurking. All theatre. I’ll bet you can still get 30 Obama phones if you need them. I visited the cemetery near Omaha Beach a few days ago. Glad I made it before there wasn’t enough money for me to walk there among our heroes.
They ran out of translation money!
Obama and his democrat clowns own this.
Make sure whenever anyone asks you “what do you think about this shutdown”, let it be known - The GOP sent multiple funding measures to the Dems for keeping the government funded, and Obama refused to sign them.
Repeat it over and over and make it sink in.
HEH!!!
WW II VETS: Normandy, was also closed we when got there!!!...Hussein Obama...tear down YOUR BARRYcades!!!
I wonder WHO issued the stand-down orders to all these cemeteries.
