Obamacare 101: What to know if you opt out of buying health insurance
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 10-1-13 | Katherine Jacobsen,

The insurance "exchanges" set up under the Affordable Care Act, where people can shop online for health insurance, went live on Oct. 1, and an estimated 48 million uninsured Americans can use them to try to find an affordable plan. The 2010 Obamacare law requires that people have health insurance, or that they pay a fee starting next year if they choose to opt out. SNIP

Would it be cheaper to buy an insurance plan, and elect to not use it, rather than pay the fee?

It depends, but as of now it is probably cheaper to pay the fine, provided you do not use any health-care services. You can calculate how much your health insurance premium would cost by using the Kaiser Family Foundation Subsidy Calculator, and then you can compare the cost to the penalty you would be assessed for having no insurance.

One thing this article did not talk about is the lack of enforcement mechanisms. Apparently the law was written with a vision toward non-enforcement: many of the tools that the IRS can use to collect other taxes can't be used for the mcconnelcare penalty.

IANAL and this is not legal advice, but you should check out articles written on this before making any decisions.

Don't care about the tools they have to enforce it. Won't comply. Period.

That is also what my own research has shown. Their easy way of collecting will be to simply keep any refunds of those whom owe. Of course, that’s when millions of clueless B-HO voters will squeal like piggies.

The very last sentence: For those who elect not to buy health coverage, the penalty will probably be assessed on the form or withdrawn from your tax refund.

I need to ask my rat senator, Bill Nelson, if he intended to jail his constituents for non-payment into Obamacare.

The tool does not work correctly for MN at least. It shows the same cost for both Bronze and silver plans while the out of pocket costs do change to reflect the difference, the plan cost does not.

Fedzilla operates regularly by sleight of hand tactics.

Many will be tricked into paying the fine.

Many are also falsely told they are “required by law” to fill out “ACS” census surveys — another shell-game because if you read the governing authority, Title 13 the law is directed to the DOC/Census Bureau...directing them to collect the data, it is a law for them to take action to take surveys but not for US citizens to respond.

I think IRS will try to bully the non-compliant but like census they wont have any teeth to enforce.

The media always points out that 48 million people CAN use the site. But it doesn’t say how many actually did.

What they also do not realize is that the $95.00 is the base fee. It is $95.00 or 1% of your income! whichever is larger.

Hardship exemptions
If you have any of the circumstances below that affect your ability to purchase health insurance coverage, you may qualify for a “hardship” exemption:

You were homeless.
You were evicted in the past 6 months or were facing eviction or foreclosure.
You received a shut-off notice from a utility company.
You recently experienced domestic violence.
You recently experienced the death of a close family member.
You experienced a fire, flood, or other natural or human-caused disaster that caused substantial damage to your property.
You filed for bankruptcy in the last 6 months.
You had medical expenses you couldn’t pay in the last 24 months.
You experienced unexpected increases in necessary expenses due to caring for an ill, disabled, or aging family member.
You expect to claim a child as a tax dependent who’s been denied coverage in Medicaid and CHIP, and another person is required by court order to give medical support to the child. In this case, you do not have the pay the penalty for the child.
As a result of an eligibility appeals decision, you’re eligible for enrollment in a qualified health plan (QHP) through the Marketplace, lower costs on your monthly premiums, or cost-sharing reductions for a time period when you weren’t enrolled in a QHP through the Marketplace.
You were determined ineligible for Medicaid because your state didn’t expand eligibility for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

It’s a house of cards....people who chose not to purchase health insurance can wait till they get sick and then purchase it. This is idiocy!!!

I will make a prediction:

If enough young people do not buy Obamacare the penalty tax will rise. Eventually it will rise to a point where they will have to buy.

The IRS may not have the power to hurt those who do not pay now, but that also will change.

Just like the Nazi’s this thing starts pout slow but eventually the Government will be given more powers, and the concentration camps will open.

I’m still waiting to see what my employer-sponsored medical plan looks like, but if it’s expensive enough that is probably what I will do.

You received a shut-off notice from a utility company.

One month every year, forget to pay the electric bill until you get a final warning. Simple.

Good. There's my first excuse. By the time the clock runs out on that one I'll have several more lined up and just keep running them in circles. I will never submit to a terrorist threat but I will play games with them.

And there is excuse #2. That should last until my mother passes since nothing ever gets cheaper.

The expenses! They increased! It was so unexpected!!!
