Justice Dept. challenges 'extremely aggressive' NC voting restrictions

The Justice Department sued North Carolina Monday in the latest salvo in the Obama administration's ongoing battle against restrictive state voting regulations.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in the Middle District of North Carolina, seeks to topple provisions of a new statute that reduce early voting access and require North Carolinians to show photo identification before they are allowed to vote.

"The state legislature took extremely aggressive steps to curtail the voting rights of African-Americans," Attorney General Eric Holder said during a news conference at the agency's headquarters.

In the last election cycle, more than 70 percent of black voters in North Carolina cast their ballots during the early voting period, Holder said.

Proponents of such laws contend they are needed to prevent voter fraud, an assertion Holder brushed off as "not real."

"We will show that these are discriminatory, both in intent and impact," Holder said.

The DOJ is also asking the court to reinstate a requirement that the agency sign off on any changes to election procedures in North Carolina and other states with histories of discrimination.

The lawsuit follows a major defeat this summer in the administration's efforts.

In June, a divided Supreme Court struck down the Voting Rights Act's provision requiring states to obtain federal preclearance before tightening voting rules.

Officials from the North Carolina attorney general's office could not immediately be reached for comment.

Is Holder suggesting that His People are too stupid, lazy and incompetent to get themselves some photo ID?

Who’s the racist again?

so, if voting is a right, free of obligation to prove ones eligibility, will folks be required to provide ID when accessing their “right” to govt. healthcare should ACA become fully implemented?

Number the ballots and make the ‘voter’ show a valid ID before getting ‘only one ballot.’ Yeah...that’s discriminatory to blacks.

Producing photo-id is an extremely aggressive step to curtail the voting rights of African-Americans?

What about Asian-Americans? Or Hispanic-Americans? Or European-Americans? Or any other hyphenated American? Does requiring a photo-id curtail their right?

And just how exactly is a photo-id a curtailment of a right?

Holder is a JOKE.

I heard on NPR this morning that they don’t really expect this Federal lawsuit to succeed. In order to win the feds will have to prove intentional discrimination on the part of legislators, and that’s a very high bar to get over.

I wonder what percentage of the Black population doesn’t have a state ID or DL? Do they not have it as a form of struggle/protest against The Man?

Perhaps Mr. Boehner and Mr. Issa can explain why this anti-American creep is still the Attorney General.

They had a chance to dump him this summer.

Nothing happened.

Are they depending on Lois Lerner to roll over?

Doesn't matter. They have enough with that and all the other abominations this Black Nationalist perpertrated.

Get with it and dump him.

They all have IDs, they just don’t want to show it when they are voting under another name.

Yah,and the UNITED STATES GOVERNMENTengages in "extremely aggressive" practices when it require me to show an ID at my local CVS when buying my over-the-counter allergy medicine...a drug deemed to be so harmless that it doesn't even require a physician's prescription.

A few months ago I went to our Town Hall to cast an absentee ballot in the upcoming Senate election (which,of course, the worthless psychopath Maoist candidate won). While waiting for her to look something up I asked if she needed my ID...she said no.I asked her why not and she said that state law forbids asking for ID in a situation like mine.I then asked her if people who are registering for the first time to vote in the town are required to show any kind of proof of US citizenship. She said "no",state law also forbids requiring such proof.

That's Massachusetts for ya.

That's why NC passed the law. NC had basically the same law and it encouraged voter fraud which the vote fraudsters take full advantage of. Everybody knew it, but nothing could be done about it until we elected a Republican Senate and Legislature and in 2012 a Republican Governor.

Starting with the implementation of the law in 2016, it will be twice as tough to win as a Democrat as this cancels out many of their fraudulent votes - unless you count the voting machine fraud, which happened in 2012, on the Presidential ballot line (all in Obama's favor, but fortunately just short of "enough" to swing NC into the Obama camp).

Now that the jig is up (pun intended), Holder wants to shut down the new safeguards. The slimy rat should be prosecuted for subornation of voter fraud and wasting taxpayer monies on frivolous lawsuits.
