The winner of the Little Miss Hispanic Delaware contest has been stripped of her crown over concerns that she is not Hispanic.
The News Journal of Wilmington (http://delonline.us/15AmTA6) reported Saturday that 7-year-old Jakiya McKoy lost the title two weeks ago.
Some critics of the decision say the move was made because McKoy is black and not Latina enough, though organizers say it had nothing to do with race.
"There is just like a baseline of disrespect to black women," Daniel Jose Older, who started a Change.org petition, told the newspaper. "As Latinos, it's really important that we understand what's going on with us and that we reclaim this girl as our sister.
Pageant organizers require contestants to be at least 25 percent Hispanic.

Shouldn’t they determine who is eligible BEFORE the event, and then they should live with their own decision.
I’m glad I’m a conservative and don’t have to weigh the “facts” in this case: grammy is an illegal, that’s a plus, but “Jakiya” would be worth a full twenty points in Scrabble, that’s a minus, then there’s a self-described Latino talking about “disrespect”, so I don’t know which little all-defining race box to put that guy in.
So let’s just go to the default: Pageant organizers are racists, there we go, done.
I want to see the definition of Hispanic that contestants have to be at least 25% of.
Would a Native Mexican (indigenous) qualify? If she didn’t speak Spanish? Would a Peruvian named Hiro Matsuko? An Argentinian named Greta Hoffner? A Castilian named Catalina Gutierrez? A Spaniard named Maryam Abouzaid?
She could be Mulatto, Mestizo, White or Black or the mixture of Black and Mexican Indian, (Zambo), and still me Hispanic.
When we lived in San Antonio I would occasionally run into a guy who was as White Robert the Bruce, but who spoke only Spanish.
I have seen Cubans in Florida who were the same. They could be Black, White of Zimmerman.
I loved this line:
