Speaker John Boehner said Thursday the GOP-controlled House will not accept a temporary spending bill from the Democratic Senate if it is shorn clean of a tea party plan to "defund Obamacare."
"I don't see that happening," Boehner told reporters.
At the same time, the Ohio Republican said House GOP leaders would unveil legislation to lift the government's borrowing cap, but only if the new health care law is delayed for a year. He defended that measure's relatively modest spending cuts even as some rank-and-file conservatives pressed for more.
"It does not cut spending significantly. It does not fix the problem," Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said of the debt ceiling package. He said he was undecided about whether to support it. "We need to significantly cut federal government spending, or long-term have a balanced budget constitutional amendment," he said.
Obamacare: Massive New Rules Revealed for 2013
Pressure is building on fractious House Republicans as a partial government shutdown looms at midnight Monday if a bitterly-divided Congress can't send a temporary spending bill to President Barack Obama on time.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid immediately rejected Boehner's proposal. Meanwhile, the Senate trudged ahead toward a Friday vote on stripping the defund Obamacare provision from the House-passed stopgap funding bill.

Nobody seems to be adding to the individual’s costs of Obamacare, the difference between what they used to pay and what they will pay under ObamaCare COUPLED with the fact that they are not getting a pay raise.
Nor are they adding in all the additional taxes that the same individual will pay that they formerly did not pay.
Nor are they adding in the huge deductibles that have been enacted.
Nor are they adding in the fact that the copays have not been capped.
Whatever the cost looks like on some chart, no matter how bad it looks, it’s actually worse.
I have already been discussing cash arrangements with my regular doctors. Who have also been broaching the subject with other patients.
The hospital is another matter. Bunch of assh0les.
Indeed. Buuuuump!
Take heart, the takers don’t vote near as heavily in the mid-terms. This is why we smoked them in 2010, and why we are setting up to smoke them again.
I won’t deny that at times delay is the best tactic. Sometimes doing nothing is the best, things simply work out.
We aren’t in that kind of situation now, mainly because we don’t have ‘troops’ we can rely on. Hell, we can’t be sure what most of them will do tommorrow, Friday September 27, 2013, let alone a year from now, so it’s vital to strike when the iron is hot. And it sure looks hot to me.
I don’t know all the fine legalities of how the CR works, or any of the other stuff for that matter. I doubt that but a handful of Freepers do, if that many.
We have to have faith in someone close to the problem and trust that they know what they are doing, and in this case it’s Cruz. He seems to know what he’s doing, and, most importantly, is unafraid to do it.
For the moment, for this very important issue, he’s our George Washington, and deserves our full, complete support.
Agreed
In the campaign season, also trot out plenty of low-income people who have to choose between food and Obamacare.
Basically, use the Dems own playbook against them.
Have you seen these ridiculous policies? $400 a month for a $3200 deductible? No wonder people are saying they can afford the policy but they can't afford to use it.
There's your campaign ad right there. Just add a can of dog food and a spoon for effect.
a delay in the individual mandate would suit me
likely the camel nose under tent
With another campaign explaining how the Democrats are the party of the super rich and their toady bureaucrats and foundations playing games with regulations for fun and profit at public expense and it's a slam dunk.
Delaying it by a year helps the democRats by moving the pain beyond the mid term elections.
Nice touch
Of course this is just my humble opinion.
DE f'in' FUND!!
period
Full Stop.
When Chief Traitor John Roberts declared the ACA a 'tax', it still made the bill unconstitutional because it did not originate in the House of Representatives... unhappily, the Constitution is no longer the supreme law of the land.
If we loved freedom as much as the Egyptian people we would gather 33 million people in the streets to reinstate the Constitution as the law of the land and to demand the removal of traitors in the SCOTUS and the Congress. Not even Stalin's government could have survived 33 million protestors...
Americans need Egyptians to demonstrate how freedom and representative government work.
No delay. Either defund or institute now and let these tyrannical bastards own it all. The delay is exactly what the rats want and the Kenyan maggot will not suffer the consequences of this tyranny.
Typical Washington, Kick the can down the road another year.
Better than the Obamanation taking effect, but also gives Dumbocraps cover for next years election by delaying the pain and effects of this craptastic law.
“...Wake up Boehner!...”
He did.
He did the right thing.
Let him and the House GOP know - loudly - that they got it right. As loudly as you let them know when they get it wrong.
God Bless Ted Cruz for shining the floodlight on this. Let him know you appreciate it was well, along with the 19 GOP Senators who voted no on the cloture.
They better stick to the script regarding the budget, no amnesty (a wall) and no Obamacare or give all of them a package of Depends and show them the door.
Actually it is. The purpose for defunding ObamaCare is not really to rid the nation of it (although ending it could be the result the defunding it in time).
At this point we really should not be drawing a red line by saying if ObamaCare continues to be the law of the land we will shut down the government. That could back-fire.
I don't see the difference between defunding ObamaCare and delaying it for a year. If there is a difference, I stand corrected.
Thanks xzins.
