Americans will pay an average premium of $328 monthly for a mid-tier health insurance plan when the Obamacare health exchanges open for enrollment next week, and most will qualify for government subsidies to lower that price, the Obama administration said on Wednesday.
The figure, based on data for approved insurance plans in 48 states, represents the broadest national estimate for how much Americans will pay for health coverage under President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law next year. The prices of the new plans are at the heart of a political debate over whether they will be affordable enough to attract millions of uninsured Americans.
Prices were lower in states with more competition among insurers and higher in states with fewer players, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said in its report. Americans will be able to sign up for the new plans via online state exchanges beginning on October 1

What do they get for their $328? What are the deductibles? Does it cover heart surgery? Please - I wish they’d address the tough questions.
$328 is a week’s pay for someone working 29 hours.
it’ll be $328/month the first year....then $600/month the second year then $900/month the third year...
Several grand in my case. Higher than the mortgage payment. And this has been characterized as a "tax" by the Supreme Court. The system will collapse rapidly with this level of "taxation". Unbelievable.
yeah...yeah...and Benghazi was caused by a video.
the other thing not mentioned is the access to care - you are looking at fewer providers and longer waiting lines. Oamacare looks like it is designed to allow everyone who doesn't work to jump into line for healthcare with those who do work and pay their own way.
And that's $1 less than leasing a brand-new BMW 320i! And who would want to drive a new BMW when he or she could have a free colonoscopy for the same money?
That, I take it is the average with all the subsidies and the near-majority already on government healthcare.
And, of course, that’s before you actually pay for your health care, since the deductibles are now so high.
It is simply not possible long-term. Wait until the demand far surpasses the supply, which it will. Just what will you be “covered” for? A get-in-line ticket? The people that don’t want it will have no choice once their companies realize they can cut costs by dumping everyone out into the “marketplace”. Of course, prices will skyrocket. Then Obamacare part 2 will come along to put price caps everywhere. This will topple private insurance and send us all into the loving arms of Uncle Sam. Oh, I just can’t wait for all the fear-mongering once we are all dependent on the government health care. Republicans want to take away your healthcare....blah blah blah.
...those who do work and pay their own way as well as paying the bills of the guys in front of them in line who don't contribute a penny!
This is probably about a tenth of actual cost. I suspect that $328 is probably the nominal figure for illegal aliens, unwed mothers, and inner city gang bangers—who won’t actually have to pay anything, because we’ll pick up their tabs.
Two great editorials in our newspaper yesterday on this subject:
1) Affordable Care Act belies its name
In 2013, I paid $176 per month for a high-deductible plan with a deductible and co-insurance out-of-pocket payment of $1,500. The result is that my out-of-pocket health care costs were $3,612.
I received my insurance information for 2014 last week. The plan most similar to what I now have that will meet the requirements of the new law costs $283 per month. To that, I have to add the deductible and co-insurance of $6,350, which makes my out-of-pocket costs $9,700, an increase of 271 percent.
I have an income of $18,000. With the new law, it is estimated that I will qualify for a $250 subsidy from the workers who make more money than I do. If I dont use that money to pay my bill, then I cannot afford health insurance and am penalized.
To summarize, this law takes money from those with higher-paying jobs to pay my health care costs because the health insurance plan I could afford failed to meet federal requirements. Is this why it is called the Affordable Care Act?
2) Guess who pays for Obamacare credits?
The Obamacare & You guide (Sept. 22 World-Herald) provides information about who qualifies for tax credits. The problem is that it should have explained how this program is funded. The U.S. government is broke with a nearly $17 trillion debt. Guess whos going to pay for these credits? People who have jobs.
When all Americans are bankrupted, there wont be discussions on all of the entitlement programs. There wont be any.
Well, if you assume this is the true average and account for averaging error, then it is still at least a mid level car payment.
That's the intent of the Affordable Care Act. When we are all bankrupt they will demand that we rewrite the Constitution to allow the government to "take care of us".
THAT is the “FREE” cost to an indigent, poor person I’ll bet....the floor, if you will.
Those numbers ARE laughable. Forbes Mag has some data to blow them out of the water.
Ok, the premiums will be subsidized for “most people”.
So some will pay for others, even though those higher costs don’t appear on the books as costs because of the subsidies.
Subsidies don’t come out of the blue from God.
This is such a travesty. I am getting hammered on both insurance and the increased tax rate to pay for this crap for others. Let me put it this way... somebody isn’t going to get a job building a barn for me this year because my obamacare health insurance taxes have gone up so much.
Mostly incomplete data. One week to start and no information.
What there is though illustrates in very glaring terms just how much of a spread there is by state and how much could change with sale of insurance across state lines, i.e. NATIONAL markets instead of the capricious actions of corrupt state insurance boards... but what about corrupt national insurance boards? Even worse.
