It's Official: Obamacare Will Increase Health Spending By $7,450 For A Typical Family of Four

What this means for a typical family of four

$621 billion is a pretty eye-glazing number. Most readers will find it easier to think about how this number translates to a typical American family—the very family candidate Obama promised would see $2,500 in annual savings as far as the eye could see. So I have taken the latest year-by-year projections, divided by the projected population and multiplied the result by 4. Simplistic? Maybe, but so too was the President’s campaign promise. And this approach allows us to see just how badly that promise fell short of the mark. Between 2014 and 2022, the increase in national health spending (which the Medicare actuaries specifically attribute to the law) amounts to $7,450 per family of 4

I just checked the available plans and costs through Covered California (the state exchange that will provide insurance) and found my premiums will DOUBLE come January. I’m self-employed and have to pay for my own insurance. Two million Californians are in the same boat, not covered by an employer.

The sticker shock is going to be intense. Even premiums for young, healthy individuals will rise significantly, as the government is mandating that all sorts of procedures must be provided at little or no cost.
I might have to get a bare-bones plan with a $5,000 deductible in order to afford the premium.

Apparently a lot of them were doing “copious amounts of drugs” because quite a few thought they were going to have “FREE” healthcare! Apparently some of them are just now learning that it will be anything but free.

This plan is supported by a somewhat unlikely coalition of self-interests, and all have contributed to its creation. Understanding what the specific interests of each of these is will help to understand what the plan is likely to lead to, short term and long term.

1. Ideological liberals with a socialist orientation: This plan does two things that are consistent with the liberal/socialist ideological mind-set; A. Redistribution of wealth, and B. Setting into motion a plan for the eventual total government takeover of medicine.

2. Power/fame/stature seeking politicians: This plan - like any plan that gives more power to the government - increases the power of politicians over the populace, and thus fulfills the needs of the glut of narcissists that now populate public office in the US.

3. A segment of large corporations: There is most definitely a segment of the business community that wants government-run health care. They want to be off the hook, and to rid themselves of employee health plans. There’s no question about this. Yes, they know that a government-run plan would require increased taxes, but they figure these taxes will be passed on to the tax-paying citizenry, and they’ll figure out a way to avoid them when the time comes.

4. Insurance companies: Insurance companies know that increased government involvement in health care is not in their best interests, and they know that the goal is the eventual total government takeover of medicine, but they are looking for a short to medium term outcome that is in their best interest. Eventually, they can turn their business plan toward other insurable markets and get out of health care entirely if it become unprofitable - or if the government takes over health care. Over the short-term, however, Obamacare promises to provide them with a large number of increased participants - many in demographics that are relatively low risk (e.g. the young), and thus could actually increase their near-term enrollments and profits. They also know that to not play ball at all would have been risky for them in the political climate that was in place when Obama took office.

5. Hospital corporations: At least for the short to medium term, hospital corporations are sitting pretty. Hospitals are paid at a higher rate for tests and imaging studies than are private physician-run offices and facilities, and many aspects of ‘medical reform’ (e.g. electronic medical record systems) have made it difficult for private groups to remain in business. Hospital corporations/systems have been buying physician practices - thus eradicating the private practice model, putting all physicians at the mercy of the hospital corporation, eradicating competition, and centralizing control of care to a group of extremely well-paid hospital executives. These people, whose ranks include many who make seven figure salaries, also know that eventually the government piper will come for them, but over the short to medium term they are sitting pretty.

There are others who are part of this ‘coalition’, but this is a decent starting point to think about.

make sure your wonderful elected leftcoast California rep knows this

and comrade, that plan with the high deductible will probably limit your doctor visits (cough cough) and that is good for society, it will ensure you don’t overuse more than your fair lifetime share of the limited (and shrinking by govt mandate) healthcare system that has become a de facto nationalized resource to be rationed by the govt

I don't like this tactic. It *confirms* that 0Care is the *law of the land*.

I don't want ANYBODY enrolled in 0Care. I want it DEFUNDED!!

Call your Republican Senator and tell them to OPPOSE CLOTURE on Harry Reid's plan to FUND 0Care. Only 6 Pubbie votes are needed for cloture to allow a vote to come up...then Harry strikes the Defunding measure. Don't let it come to a vote!!

I doubt it. Two times [2008, 2012] I put my wisdom up the collective wisdom of the voters. And both times was severely spanked. I learned my lesson. That is what the majority that voted said, via their votes, they wanted. Let them enjoy it. And as to the measly $7,450 why not let it be,say, $ 25,000-30,000. If you are going to go, go first class.

"I am still convinced the fastest way to rid the country of ObamaCare is to make sure it is 100% implemented on schedule."

Completely agree, if the defund effort fails then repubs should insist on 100% compliance no exemptions. Fair for one fair for all, and that includes all federal employees, including the president.

I agree with you that obamacare must be fully implemented. The strategy the GOP is planning (I believe) is to fight it at first, then give in warning America of the dangers of implementation and allow disastrous financial effects to take place. The electorate will be so fed up with the libs in 2014 a massive takeover of the house and senate will occur and then repeal will be a reality. By then the Fed will stop supporting the stock market which will take a nosedive. We must be patient.

None, DWTS starts this week! The opiate is applied.

Started last week, but got your point. This week is the most exciting week of TV so Obama could pass communism and it would be met with a yawn from the masses.

That $7,450 is designed to go into someone’s pocket the questions is who’s? The greatest theft in history continues with this new phase.

Another thing that my husband and I experienced last month...
We went into the doc for a yearly physical which our current plan allows for with no co-pay. A couple of weeks later, we get a bill for 2-$25 charges...co-pay to the physicals.
We asked the doctor's office what was the deal...that "physicals are covered 100%". They told us that *if* we happen to discuss current medical issues (like my high BP or my husband's high cholesterol)...it TURNS IT INTO A "REGULAR OFFICE VISIT"...which THEN causes it to be coded different and wham! - a co-pay is added.
So - apparently, you go get the physical, but don't talk about anything. If he asks you any questions, you should say nothing. Un-freaking-believable.

My aunt found that out too where her deductables ave doubled, she is 76, on Medicare and a Plan B health insurance carrier. When my mother (her sister, mom is 75 and currently fighting breast cancer) talked to her, she heard my aunt swear, which I never, ever heard her do such, and call the occupant of the White Hut an "@$$h0/e."
