On a similar note I live in Chicago so staying out of crowds is not possible However when walking past a deranged homeless guy...I used to think poor soul. Now with bath salts and Treyvon revenge attacks I’m very wary. Same with the Amish kids on the CTA...if I see some starting to roughhouse I immediately go to next subway car.

Don't put to much stock in that preventing something like this in the USA.
Lets say on an average day at the average mall there are 2000 people at the mall. Of those 2% have CCWs because they ignore the gun-free zone signs.
I am sure they could have some positive effect perhaps even taking out a few of the scumbags, but in the end the death toll would still be very high.
The scumbags want to die, they have no fear of death.
The only way to prevent this happening here is to ensure that they never, never enter the US in the first place. But thanks to our wonderful congress writing insane immigration policy the gates are wide open and its only a matter of time.
The Russians measure success in the war on terrorism by how many terrorists are killed.
The U.S. measures success by how many more dollars the government can throw at its Military/Industrial Complex. Sometimes that means we fund the terrorists.
The only other way to prevent such carnage, other than for the fact that Americans ARE ARMED to the teeth, is to do what Israel has done, BUILD a massive wall on both borders. But I am not holding my breath on that
