In America, minimum-wage workers are better paid than the average worker in Mexico. Why? It’s not because U.S. employers are more generous than their Mexican counterparts. Nor do Americans somehow deserve better pay.
American minimum-wage earners make more because they produce more. Better education and greater capital investment make American workers more productive, raising their earnings.
Competition forces businesses to pay workers according to their productivity. If companies pay less, their employees will jump ship to competitors. And if they pay workers more than they produce, they go out of business.
For better or worse, fast-food jobs are relatively low-productivity positions, typically filled by inexperienced workers. Most fast-food customers want a quick, inexpensive meal. They will not regularly pay premium prices for a burger and fries.
Doubling McDonalds’ wages would raise their total costs by 25 percent — well above profit margins. But raising prices would drive customers away.
If Congress mandated fast-food restaurants to pay $15 an hour, they would have to change operations to deliver the kind of productivity to justify those higher costs. That would mean replacing current workers with machines and hiring fewer, more skilled workers to maintain them.....

Tell me Mr. Dragnet2...who should decide what they pay their employees...you...the government....the employee. If an employer is not paying enough who decides whether or not they want to work there....you the government....the employer. I A government with the power to force any man to pay what it thinks is fair is strong enough to force any man to work for what it thinks is fair. If you like the idea of the government setting a minimum wage are you just as excited if they set a maximum wage. In Europe they can decide how far you may advance in education. Does that excite you. How much of your life are you willing to turn over to them. They are about to tell you at what age certain treatments are an option in your healthcare....when it might be better to just take the painkillers...forget about a cure...it’s just to much for society to pay. How’s that working out for you. By the way , if $15.00 and hour won’t have any effect on the rest of us why stop there....why no $20.00, $30.00....$100 an hour. There is no free ride and no reason why you the government or anyone else should have the power over another’s finances If you want those people to make $15.00 an hour go open up a burger joint and do it with you damn money...don’t stand around and try to force someone else to do it. You’re pretty damn generous when all you have to do sit behind a computer and plead the case for some one else to pay!!!
Your point begs the question, what happens when a computer/robot can do your job cheaper and more efficiently than you can? Let’s say a computer can fly an airplane better, perform a surgery better, create sturdier and more beautiful buildings, plumb a house, or fix a robot. What are humans for?

If all these jobs are meant for teens, who’s serving you up while their all in school Mr. ontap? What about all the food joints open all night?
Tell me Mr. ontap, on top of the 20 million fast food jobs, are the 30+ million retail jobs, which basically pay at or near minimum wage, also meant for teenagers?
Again, if someone actually works in a job, should they at least be paid enough for the very basic of things like rent, food and utilities?
Are the bare basics now considered luxuries in today’s America?

I’ve already answered the question...if your choice of a job is fast food you’re going to start at minimum wage ,if you want more pick something else!!! It’s not hard to find someone who say “would you like fries with that”!!!
Adjusted for inflation, the minimum wage is 67% of what it was in 1974.
Ya, I really feel bad for all these foreigners, Muslims etc., that come into the U.S.and buy up multiple McJackball franchises...
I was unfortunate enough to run into some Mideastern jackass, who had 14 Burger King franchises...What an arrogant POS he was...Most all of his franchises, the help could barely speak English, if at all.
Of course it's a win win for the Mideastern foreigners, when the help thinks company benefits mean a 5 minute break.
And people like ontap suggest these fast food franchisees are barely making it....Those poor franchise owners...yuk yuk...

It may not be hard to find somebody to say “You want fries with that” it’s not a very advanced skill and yet the franchises manage to make a profit off of it.
When somebody is working a full time job and that job doesnt pay enough for them to sleep inside and eat everyday where do you suggest they make up that shortfall of money. They can get foodstamps but then it’s the taxpayers subsidizing the FF franchise.
I’m not a FF franchiser but I see it as a triangle between the costs of the product, the profits and the cost of labor.
The argument, as I’ve seen it, is that raising minimum wage will cause prices to go up causing customer fall off and possible closure of the franchise.
So the customer has a right to cheap food, the owner has a right to his profits but the employees should just be grateful that they get to work 40 hours a week and still qualify for food stamps?
Oh and BTW I don’t buy into that argument that raising the price of a value meal 2-3 dollars will break the franchises. People may complain at first but it’ll be just like the price of a Stop & Go pack of smokes. Those places used to charge a solid $1.50 more than a smoke shop or a supermarket and they sold lots of smokes.
People are paying for speed and convienence. They’re not going to give that up for very long.
