As the number of Californians who are without their regular unemployment payments ballooned this week, peoples frustrations grew. Some have been taking their anger to online forums, while others apparently took it out on employees of the Employment Development Department.
Meanwhile, Levy said that on Thursday, the agency had more than 60,000 backlogged claims that it was processing late as it tries to catch up to tens of thousands of complaints from out-of-work Californians waiting on a payment.
The backlog began over Labor Day weekend, when an internal computer upgrade mistakenly and automatically marked some accounts with a stop-pay flag, Levy said
She added that only a fraction of accounts have been affected, but while that number was 20,000 last week, it multiplied to 90,000 Wednesday, and was down to 60,000 Thursday

a computer glitch for 3 weeks?
90,000 X say $1000 = $90,000,000
bump
Bttt
Just wait until government takes over your health care. What could go wrong?
Keep ‘em loaded and handy, folks . . here’s an early-days bellwether for an EBT crash.
Cloward & Piven at work.. Meanwhile, Gov. Brown does all he can to force businesses OUT of California while signing into Law Driver's Licenses for illegals, Illegals as jurors, Illegals now allowed to practice Law, etc..
I am surprised this situation is even being reported.
Last I read was the CA UI fund was out of money and had borrowed $14 billion from the Feds. Who knows what it’s up to now. Maybe they have been cut off.
Just wait until there aren’t enough people working to be taxed for the funds needed to fund those EBT cards. Then what?
Did the computer cut them off when their benefits expired? Because as we’ve all been told, the economy is going great and unemployment is not a problem.
My wife works at a WMSC...
These folks who shop at Wal-mart for the most part will not riot...They may complain and get loud...
They are mostly sheeple conditioned to obey with little fuss and and will just leave their carts in the aisle and came back when the EBT cards function again...
Now if the EBT cards NEVER function again...all bets are off...
“Did the computer cut them off when their benefits expired?”
Or maybe they are cutting off the fraudulent claims by cross referencing to other databases.
Any "upgrade" etc. is supposed to be thoroughly tested before implementing. I remember having to spend weekends debugging, or at least resetting a program back to its original state because project leader let the change go through untested because "it was minor".
Californians should expect stuff like this on a regular basis from here on out. Living there is going to be somewhat like living in Greece.
Except that anytime they complain too much, just tell them to pack up and leave.
Whatever you may think of corporations and how they treat their customers, at least you aren’t forced to do business with them like you are with the government. I can refuse to give my money, time or attention to any company that offends me or provides poor service. I don’t have that choice when it comes to a government agency.
Your numbers are way off. The maximum California benefit per week is $450 for an initial claim. That presumes all of the people filing were at the top pay rate which is not likely. But it is an interesting idea that the computer ‘glitch’ does keep the state from spending money it probably didn’t have at that moment. California though has been running deficits for years playing book keeping games going to make the budget look balanced when it isn’t
People are claiming they have not been paid for a month.
‘The backlog began over Labor Day weekend, ‘ That is not a full month. People forget that there is a one week waiting period in California before unemployment kicks in (more if you got vacation and sick pay as part of your end package). Then you wait another two weeks before your benefits fund. So three weeks is really typical. Either they have never been out of work before or they just thought that some how the money is instantly available which it never has been
