Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel condemned a Thursday night shooting on Chicagos South Side that wounded 13 people, including a three-year-old boy.
Senseless and brazen acts of violence have no place in Chicago and betray all that we stand for, said Obamas former chief of staff in the first of a series of tweets Friday morning.
The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, Emanuel added.
Witnesses said several gunmen fired at least 20 shots at a group on basketball courts, according to NBC Newss Chicago affiliate. The station said Emanuel returned to Chicago from Washington, D.C., after news of the shooting broke, canceling meetings he had scheduled with officials in President Obamas Cabinet.
Chicago has experienced a spate of gun and gang-related violence in recent years. Just this week, the FBI released new crime statistics that deemed Chicago the nations murder capital, surpassing New York.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat from Illinois, said the shooting shows the need for Congress to act on gun control.
Congress must act now to pass gun safety legislation that protects our children, families and our communities, Schakowsky said in a statement Friday morning.
The country has seen two mass shootings this week, Schakowsky said, referring to the attack Monday at Washingtons Navy Yard that left 12 victims dead.
At what point do we act? she said. How many more innocent lives have to be taken until Congress is forced to do something? These questions should no longer go unanswered. I am outraged and angered that gun violence continues to affect the lives of innocent people.
Good thing Chicago’s got all those guns locked down because of those great gun control laws, eh, Rahm?
Rahm? Hello?
I not beleive any of these reports, because Chicago is a gun free city.
They should arrest the guns that did this.

Uhh......Earth to Rahm. This has been going on in Chicago for YEARS. Where have you been? Also, you wouldn’t be making any statement if these shootings were spread out individually over a two week period.....which is typical for shootings in Chicago.
Can't he bring Zer0 in to give a speech down there every evening after dark?
There. Now it’s all better!
Is this about the 1985 Bears?
A gang of sons.
Urban people should go on a strike, refusing to spend one dime in their cities until Stop, pat, and frisk can be done, starting first in the areas most infected with bad people.
People who live in cities deserve the right to be safe. Guns are not the problem. It's the people who use them, a can of gasoline, a crowbar, knife, club, etc....
Why does north Chicago have a low crime rate and south Chicago have such a high crime rate? (Hint; it has nothing to do with laws or the number of guns)
There. Problem solved.
Psst, hey Einstein, Chicago and Illinois already have gun control. It didn't prevent this.
A large part of the violence in Chicago is caused by city sub-contractors. Rahm should be made aware of this. When unauthorized drug dealers, underage sex trafficking, or other city monopolies are infringed upon by “coyote” operations, the city itself cannot afford the bad publicity of using the regular police to sanction them. Instead they loose their sub-contractors (authorized criminal elements) to perform the sanctions for them. This provides significant advantages, including the shrieks for for more police, wails of more gun control, and tranferring blame (a Progressive standby) outside the city and his control.
The town that Capone built.
Heard them talking about this on the radio this morning. Apparently none of the eye witnesses saw or heard anything about what happened.
