House Republicans survived a key test vote Thursday on their plan to keep the government running while trying to halt the health care law, defying a veto threat from President Obama and inching closer to a shutdown showdown with Senate Democrats. Top Republicans say their party’s strategy is unlikely to succeed and not worth shutting down the government, but some rank-and-file lawmakers said they have to draw a line now and use the leverage of the spending bill to end the president’s signature achievement.

I am in Missouri and just called both my senators, Roy Blunt and Claire McCaskill. Very nice young lady answered in Senator Blunt’s office. When I told her the reason for my call she said” all right!” with a lot of emphasis and enthusiasm. Then got a recording at Senator McCaskill’ s.
When I called before in the beginning of this fiasco on health care, her staff person was very rude and told me the Senator would vote what she thought was right for the country. Then received a letter stating same. Of course we know she would support Obama, no matter what he is doing.

The reason I think the Senate is a big deal is because it is going to require exposure of the Dems. They are like cockroaches. They will have to deal with this and only the hardliners are ok with that. It makes the sleazy Dem Senators take a stand! It exposes them....this is good!

’ve got a co-worker in hysterics because she thinks she won’t get SS checks....

You may want to very gently tell your co-worker to do her own research. Will that offend her?

Someone needs to remind ‘pro-life Democrats’ [sic] Joe Donnelly and Bob Casey that Obamacare funds abortion. Not that it will matter.

Yes, there’s a certain number of dollars one can make even when collecting....if they go over then it’s deducted from SS.... Which for some is a good thing since their SS would not begin to sustain them. They’d end up on Gov. Assistance programs and the like.

I work with part-timers who could not make ends meet on SS alone.

Believe it or not, there are many Liberals who are unaware of a large segment of the population that is opposed to ACA. I see it all the time on facebook. Those that are aware dismiss it as right wing propaganda.

The future of the progressive agenda is at stake here. They would bring this country to a halt, and put the blame on republicans, -- while the news cycle covers their flanks -- before they allow Obamacare to be dropped. We would see another occupy type uprising prior to 2014. Hmmm, that might actually help the GOP if it comes to pass.

Indeed, and sorry for my confusing language. I’ll tell you GL, despite all that is going wrong fiscally, this one Constitutional requirement being overlooked really sticks in my craw.
Even when Odumbo publishes an unrealistic budget, it goes nowhere. It’s simply a lack of leadership from a guy who has probably never even done a household budget. And the intricacies of baseline budgeting and his spending bonanzas clearly indicate he doesn’t care at all about only budgets...but debt.
I could go on forever, rambling about the reverberations of this but would rather the so-called Repub leadership did it. Then again, I probably have a better chance of winning the lottery.

Take the Senate and the Presidency and you have something.

Wow. A fellow Freeper who is acting on the logical facts, and has not drank from the Hannity/Paul/Cruz Kool Aid.

You are a rareity these days.

Yes - we are going to "de-fund" ObamaCare (which is mostly mandatory spending) by voting in the House, despite the fact that the Senate and White House are controlled by the other party.

Hey, I have this Nigerian friend. He is a multimillionaire, and he needs some help transferring a huge wad of cash. If you cooperate just a little to help him make this transaction, you could earn big bucks! Want to participate?

It’s for her husband...

I was talking to her (and another co-worker), that it now lays on the Dems (she’s a Democrat) because the House passed a budget and if they don’t want to sign on to it, it’s on them if the govt shuts down, since the Senate IS Democrat controlled.

She then made the comment about how if the govt shuts down, she guesses her husband will just have to be happy, NOT getting his SS checks....

This will make Senate Democrats have to vote for 0bamaCare one more time before the mid-terms. That will be painful to some marginal Dem seats that are in play.

I sent her a link I found (http://www.foxbusiness.com/government/2013/09/19/what-happens-if-government-shuts-down/) where they explain what actually happens if the govt shuts down. In the article, it explains:

Social Security and Medicare payments will still go out, but experts say a shutdown could bring delays.

Both programs are considered mandatory funding, which means they were written to be funded indefinitely and there’s no annual appropriation.

AND

“The president will do what he can to make it seem like the public is going to be inconvenienced with a shutdown,” says von Spakovsky. “National parks will close and the places people like to visit in Washington, D.C., will be unavailable. But planes will still fly, Medicaid and Social Security checks will still go out…the average person might not even notice a shutdown.”

She thanked me for the info. Apparently she only views what’s on MSN....and does NOT do any research. Typical democrat.

To: yield 2 the right
Wait for the back-channeled deal(you know, the usual screw-you), this seems too good too be true.....

Yeah, I read that the process that will most likely be followed is for the Senate to strip out the wording on defunding Obamacare, pass it and send it back to the House where the House will most likely vote to approve whatever the Senate sends back....ugh!
