Poll: Republican voters have embraced libertarian values

The libertarian philosophy is taking the Republican Party by storm, according to a poll conducted by FreedomWorks, a DC-based grassroots service center with over 6 million members.

With Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) and many other liberty-minded politicians gaining influence, libertarianism has generated new interest inside the Republican Party, much to the chagrin of the GOP's political establishment....

"FreedomWorks' poll shows that 42 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the word ‘libertarian,' and only 10 percent don't know the word, compared to 27 percent who don't know nationally," they added.

And the term "libertarian" may still turn off some Republican voters, the basic message of the philosophy earns significant favor. The poll found that 68% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree with the statement that "individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don't hurt others, and that the government should keep out of people's day-to-day lives."

What's more, an eye-popping 78% of Republicans consider themselves to be "fiscally conservative, but socially moderate," which is a significant finding given the debate in the GOP on social issues.

Looking outside of just the Republican box, the poll found that 66% of respondents consider themselves to fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

These numbers show that the libertarian message is appealing, not only to Republican voters, but also to all Americans; further advancing the case for conservative-libertarian fusionism as a way to promote free market ideals, limited government, and personal liberty....

Ok. You’re are hearing. I can then only attribute your responses to bad faith.

Only a couple more years of witch trials before the guardians of republican purity start begging the unclean for their votes.

Welcome to freerepublic, you dislike conservatives that much?

You embrace the left’s agenda, I respond.

Gays in the military, for instance.

There is a big difference between a little-L libertarian and the big-L Libertarian Party that espouses the values you describe.

There is zero difference between the libertarians and the party they created.

You guys tell that lie because you want your positions to remain fluid to be adjusted for various audiences, you do not want actual positions on political issues written down in text.

Uh, no, there’s a big difference. Much like the word ‘liberal’ got hijacked - look at the definition of a classical liberal and compare it to the current one; two completely different things.

Also, little-l libertarians are not generally afraid to post our positions in writing. It’s easy: “Is it in the Constitution? No? Then the Feds have no business doing it!”

No more so than conservative Republicans actually run the Republican Party. The last time your statement would be true would have been around 1992.

You think I’m supposed to make you understand “you don’t represent conservatives to me”...

In my opinion, everyone on the thread BUT you understands that quote, and I’m happy with it.

Exactly how much of my attention do you think you deserve?

Uh, no, there is zero difference between libertarians and the party they formed.

For instance this libertarian position.

“”Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government’s treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws.””

I am one of those “Libertarian Republicans” that many of you think is all evil and want to rid the GOP of “real” conservatives. That is bunk, and I will do my best to explain why.

First, I am a Navy vet so the last thing I am is soft on defense. Ron Paul and other libertarians are crazier than a rat in a tin $hit house when it comes to defense. I realize that we must protect our interests globally, this is not 1820.

What is a “real” conservative? The last time I checked a “real” conservative would have a huge problem with the government running people’s lives. This is why gay marriage and abortion are such issues. I am not in favor of either, but I damn sure am not in favor of the Feds dictating the actions of people either. Leave those issues to the states and locals.

On this site many complain about how the liberals claim that paying taxes to support the “needy” is a form of charity and as Christians we should not be so loathe to do so. Conservatives correctly argue that it is not charity if one is forced to give by the barrel of a gun. The same applies to legislating morality. Are we being moral by not performing or favoring gay marriage or abortion (I oppose abortion because the baby has rights too) because the federal government does not allow it? The same principle applies, so no we are not being moral. The GOP is seen as being hypocritical by many in the electorate because of this. We all know those things are wrong, but what matters is what is in a person’s heart, and that cannot be legislated on any level, so why compromise our limited government principles trying?

So, when it proposed that the GOP let social issues go on a national level, think again as to why this may be a palatable idea. As of right now, cultural issues are not winning over voters. There are many reasons for this. But, if we want to fix the GOP brand I am of the belief that what we need to do is declare that the GOP still opposes these issues, but is not interested in having the federal government do so. That they should be left to the states. The GOP should truly push a very limited government at the federal level and encourage voters to handle social issues at local levels.

The federal government needs to concentrate on carrying out its mandated duties. One of which is border security (which is why I oppose illegal immigration). Not all libertarians think the same way, as can be said about the members of any political party. Because some come out in favor of gay marriage does not mean we all are. If that is the case then the same could be said about Republicans.

Negative. That is the big L party’s platform. The little l position is generally “This is none of the government’s business and therefore should not be the subject of regulation.”

Actually this is what I asked for clarification on, your first post on the thread., So far you have expended a lot of effort and nastiness while avoiding explaining it.
