WASHINGTON (AP) Michelle Obama used the power of her bully pulpit Wednesday to push food companies and television broadcasters to do more to promote healthier foods to children and to do it faster.
Research shows food marketing is a leading cause of childhood obesity because the ads and promotions lead impressionable kids to then pester their parents to eat what they saw on TV, consumer advocates say.
The first lady cited a "cultural shift" taking place in America's eating habits, and highlighted as examples salad bars that are now in many school lunchrooms and kids' restaurant menus that offer such items as broccoli and whole-wheat pasta.
But while she said there has been progress, including slight reductions in childhood obesity rates in a few states and cities, Mrs. Obama noted that "we clearly have much more work to do" when 1 in 3 kids in the U.S. is on track to develop diabetes.

Bully pulpit? No. I'll be kind.
Imperial Soapbox..
posting this has made me hungry..
Bon appetit, kids.
Say Good night, Moochelle.
Salad Bars aren’t exactly healthy....and the thought of a salad bar used exclusively by kids is downright scary!
On second thought....I guess they need something to build up those immunities ;-)
I guess she has to start with reducing her own sterns.
T the whole Foods store the other day, the cashier was hawking some program. She couldn’t tell me who was behind it. Collecting funds.
Reps from the market go out to the schools and tell the kids how to eat.
As if the kids are in charge, or should be.
I declined. I said, if the moms or the parents were the audience, then I could consider it.
I’m an alien. I speak a completely different language. I have an independent thought among people who pretend all their thoughts are independent.
Telling kids how to eat is telling them their parents don’t know how to feed them and that the govt school needs to hold seminars for the kids on how to feed themselves.
To break trust of the kid to the parent like that, and for parents to condone it is more destructive in my view than eating donuts for breakfast.
Read some of the comments at the link...OVERWHELMINGLY negative! Except for one “Ladyhawke”, who’s obv. a lefty troll....
Good post.
she wants all the fat tasty food for herself.
Research shows food marketing is a leading cause of childhood obesity...
Genuine research shows people who can't connect causes and effects in an orderly, logical way are stupid, poorly educated, emotionally retarded, or all three.
Considering how healthy beavers are, the new school lunch will probably be a block of wood.
Do you realize how unsanitary a salad bar is . . .case in point. My Dad and I were eating in a restaurant with a salad bar and buffet when I looked over at the salad bar and there a man sneezed big time, green snot running down his nose big time and then he wiped away the “big time” with his hands only then to pick up the salad bar utensils. Fast forward to all the people in line picking up all the utensils thereafter. . .let alone the sneeze all over the food. . .then sitting down to eat fried chicken or a roll. Then multiply the scenario a hundred fold before you pick up the utensil. Sometimes it takes a “show me” moment to impact lives. . .it did ours. . .in fact eating out isn’t on our list when we can at all help it. Have you seen the food handlers these days. Well back to the school salad bar. . . hello bacteria.
Michelle has had plastic surgery on her booty.
Michelle is a bully.
And here I thought obesity was caused by actually putting things in your mouth. Silly me.
What happened to the days when parents would say “No” to their children’s demands for junk food? Are these parents completely mute? Unable to say the word, “No”? What is wrong with these people?
I already hide the sugar. Guess I’ll have to hide my salted butter too when Mrs. 0bama comes to inspect the homes of the proles.
