Report: Navy Yard Gunman 'Gathered Weapons Along the Way'

NBC News reports that Aaron Alexis was armed with "an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and a handgun" when he was killed in a shootout with authorities. Law enforcement told NBC "they believed he arrived packing only the shotgun, which he bought last week from a gun dealer in Lorton, Va., about 20 miles from Washington."  

The Washington DC local NBC affiliate says that sources informed them "that surveillance footage showed that he began his attack with a shotgun, but was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle."

The suspected gunman appeared to have seized firearms from two of his victims as he moved through the building along the Anacostia River in southeast Washington, where 3,000 Navy employees go to work each day, many of them carrying authorized firearms.

Excellent use of a good idea. I wonder what the average CNN host would do if a guest just kept waving those pictures in his/her face instead of answering gotcha questions?

Even then, in my experience, a loaded M16 is a rare weapon on a non-infantry, non-basic-training military base.

I’m watching a recording of last night’s Piers Morgan show. He just CONFIRMED that the shooter bought the AR-15 from a local gun shop in Northern Virginia...

And you would believe Morgan because...???

Basically, he could have arrived with a baseball bat....whacked the first guard....taken his weapons....and done all the damage from that point on. It’d dismay the gun-rights folks that he used a non-weapon to gain a real-weapon, but that’s the reality of this mess.

Michael Moore admitted the same headf*** to his argument against guns on 9-11-2001. He was in the midst of editing/completing his movie about the Columbine shootings and gun culture when 19 hijackers took 4 airplanes and killed roughly 3,000 people without a single firearm.

But Piers Morgan (on his show) was shouting down one of his guests, saying that the gunman legally bought the AR-15. I wonder if he will apologize on his next show for his blatant error?

He was only following orders...confuse the issue and don't allow this crisis to go to waste.

I’m going to venture a guess about the ownership, hiring practices, and preferred federal govt contract award status of the HP subcontractor who employed this chip-on-the-shoulder nutjob .....

My first thought was that this subcontractor had minority ownership (which is pretty much a guarantee of getting a contract), but it turns out that is not the case. That said, there is constant pressure on federal contractors to have a large inventory of minority employees, so there's no question in my mind that this played a role in his employment.

The Ag teacher in my high school took a “not too far away” shot to the back with a shotgun. All wounds were superficial and he was never in danger of dying. And what kind of shotgun? How many shells?

I’m finding it a little hard to believe that he did so much damage with a shot gun and two pistols. Were the pistols automatic? Did he take ammo from the owners or just get what was in them?

BTW, the woman I mentioned before who escaped is black, eye witness immediate aftermath told reporter ‘a bad shot’ also black woman. I haven't seen any mention of the 12 victims.

The firm that Alexis worked for, The Experts, was a subcontractor for Hewlett-Packard. According to HP, “Alexis was an employee of a company called ‘The Experts,’ a subcontractor to an HP Enterprise Services contract to refresh equipment used on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) network,” HP said late on Monday.

In June, HP announced that it has been awarded a $3.45 billion project to build the Navy’s “Next Generation Enterprise Network,” or NGEN.

The project is intended to provide secure data and IT services, including data storage, e-mail, and video teleconferencing to the Navy and Marine Corps, according to the General Accountability Office. That award was a continuation of an existing contract that HP has with the Navy.

The Navy has awarded incumbent vendor Hewlett Packard a potential five-year, $3.5 billion contract to develop what will be the world’s largest private computer network.

Called the Next Generation Enterprise Network (NGEN), the project will replace the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI), a contractor-owned and operated network serving 800,000 Navy and Marine Corps personnel. NGEN will serve roughly the same number of personnel in both services, both in the U.S. and foreign locations.

For the Navy, the new network will be government-owned and contractor-operated, while the Marine Corps will have a government-owned and government-operated model with contractor support. The Marine Corps wanted the ability to travel with the physical components of its network and preferred running the network itself, said Bill Toti, vice president and account executive for HP’s Navy & Marine Corps accounts.

NGEN “required a different approach, a different operating model and it required a different team,” Toti said in an interview. “It wasn’t just optics, but we really did try our best to look at the evolving requirements and build a team that met that need.”

HP’s team includes AT&T Government Solutions, Inc., International Business Machines Global Business Services Federal, Lockheed Martin Services, Inc, and Northrop Grumman Systems Corp.

“I believe we got the best of U.S. industry at the table for this,” Sean Stackley, assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, told reporters Thursday.

The transition to NGEN is expected to take about 13 months, considering there are no bid protests.

A crazy guy with a shot gun gets into the installation, takes weapons and wrecks carnage. Just think what several trained operatives could do. Military security at the Washington Naval Yard sucked.
