A Russian official blasted “American exceptionalism” in a tweet Monday morning, saying the deadly shooting at Washington’s Navy Yard confirms the worst about the U.S. “A new shootout at Navy headquarters in Washington — a lone gunman and 7 corpses. Nobody’s even surprised anymore,” tweeted Alexey Pushkov, a member of the Russian parliamentary foreign affairs committee.

I wonder if the guy is referring to American base personnel who are not responsible for base security not being allowed to carry guns. I think that Clinton-era rule was dumb, but I wonder whether other armed forces do it differently.

The crimes of Stalin and the Communists were exceptional: the gulags, the forced confinement of dissidents to “institutions” for re-education, the killing of real or potential opponents, the deliberate starvation of the Ukrainians. Oh so very exceptional. This is the era Putie longs for.
