In Afghanistan drawdown, U.S. forced to take costly option in transporting military gear out

As it intensifies its withdrawal from Afghanistan, the U.S. military is being forced to fly massive amounts of gear and equipment out of the country instead of using cheaper overland and sea routes, according to Pentagon officials.

Military logisticians would like to send home 60 percent of their equipment and vehicles by trucking them into Pakistan and then loading them onto ships — the least expensive method by far. But cargo is flowing out on that route at only one-third the planned rate, the officials said.

The government of Afghanistan closed the border this summer after a dispute over whether the Pentagon and its contractors should have to pay $70 million in customs “fines” for taking the military gear out of the country. The Pentagon has refused to pay, calling the penalties a thinly veiled attempt at a shakedown.

U.S. and Afghan officials said last month that they had resolved the conflict, after the government in Kabul reluctantly backed down and reopened the border crossings into Pakistan.

We shouldn't be leaving these third rate petty thieves alive much less paying them anything.

Wow, I wonder how much it would have cost BEFORE we cleaned up the place and installed an honest government!

Shell their Capitol and then ask them how much they are going to pay the families of all our fallen in death benefits for giving them their country back. And if the answer is wrong, shell them again until it’s right! Who the hell do these bastards think they are? American lives and tax dollars have been expended on their behalf and they want us to pay them so we can take home whats ours? They sound like pirates, and America knows damn well what to do with pirates. Unfortunately Zeros balls are in moochelle’s purse.

I’d blow the stuff up and leave the the pile of junk behind before I’d pay them a dime.

Maybe we should give them a bill for services rendered?

And Obama wants us to rescue another country of ingrates from a tyrannical government, ie, Syria?

Americans should be reminded how "thankful" the people of Iraq and Afghanistan were and are before we do the same thing for another country in that God forsaken area of the planet.

Defend Israel. Definitely. Any other country? Forget it.

For that kind of coin we could be shooting our way out. Maybe they would prefer that?

Who really cares, at this point. It’s pathetic to see the U.S. military leaving yet another Third World sh!t-hole with our tails between our legs, isn’t it?

In a sane world we would go in and kill those that need killing, break what needs breaking and then appoint a viceroy to rule over the rabble.

Every time you were forced to do it would be another lesson to other despots.

Might be cheaper to pay them storage rent as sure as hell we will be back in that area before long if odumbo has his way. Perhaps we could move the vehicles over to the Iraq western border for the potential invasion into Syria.
