OUCH!
I sense the trooper had been downright hypnotized by the approaching and receding lights
Don’t want to speculate on the cause w/o data, but this is why you never EVER ride without a helmet.
Yep....I’d bet the trooper was distracted looking at his console laptop and just didn’t see them. Just an accident due to negligence on his part.....(UNLESS THEY WERE TICKETED POST-ACCIDENT for something dumbass like ‘driving too slow’ as a cover up.)
Own up to it and pay the due.

I gotta admit that this video does bring up the point that one of the greatest contributors to accidents regarding people going the same direction is goss differences in speed. Going extra slow is not always the safe option.
IIRC, the minimum speed on an interstate is 40MPH...
That or texting was my first thought.
I’ll bet he keeps his job.
Wow, no, I'd say the salient feature of this accident was the simple and unmitigated lack of attention from the trooper doing the driving. Rolling up and smashing another vehicle from behind at full road speed, with no braking or evasive action, can only be the result of dangerous negligence on the part of the driver.
Riding a lower speed at night on a motorcycle is prudent, particularly with a passenger and particularly in Ohio. There are many deer on the roads this time of year and many smaller animals like raccoons that pose a hazard to a rider.
Simply getting on the road does leave yourself vulnerable to a driver who is paying no attention to what he is doing and thereby threatening others. That's all that happened here.
It’s not that I don’t agree with your post. I basically do.
But as a rider myself I fully understand the full meaning of the line in that defensive driving commercial that aired around 1970:
“Yes. He was right. Dead right.”
If I’m driving or riding slow, I watch my mirrors almost more than what is in front of me. Sure, if someone hits me it’s their fault, but I ride a motorcycle. It means my goal is not so much accident survival is it is accident avoidance. And I’ve done it many, MANY times.
They will probably charge the couple with “Failure to yield to an Emergency Vehicle”
Many police vehicles now have more electronic gear around the driver’s seat than do many aircraft. However, it seems they need external crash avoidance sensors as well.
Such sensors exist for many civilian automobiles, and they would need optimization for police use.
I bet he was texting.
After the accident he seemed more concerned about the damage to his radiator than plowing into two people.
Pigs need to slow down. I bet he was doing a hundred. Lock him up for attempted murder.
At least in the video clips they give us here, that does appear the case.
How damned stupid. The guys wearing the badges aren’t necessarily there to help ya......
If this trooper is like the cops where I’m at, he was driving at least 20 to 30 mph over the speed limit, and the motorcycle was probably doing less than the speed limit. As others have said, the cop was probably distracted by something, and boom.
The folks who got hit are lucky to be alive, and they will need the unexpected wealth that is coming their way.
Cops in some towns are just the most dangerous gang.
