On the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, one man allegedly chose to mark the somber occasion by defacing a Louisiana memorial honoring the victims.
Police have arrested 35-year-old Salvador Perez, accused of placing two cardboard cutout images of crashing planes at the 9/11 Memorial in downtown Lafayette.
Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said Perez was arrested Wednesday on a charge of criminal damage to a historic building and criminal trespassing.
Perez was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. He faces up to $1,000 in fines and two years in jail if convicted.
Police responded to Parc San Souci at 8am after receiving reports of vandalism at the memorial. According to investigators, the insensitive graffiti was apparently placed at the monument overnight Tuesday.
The 9/11 monument is a 1-by-100 scale of both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
It includes a pair of 13-foot I-beams from the World Trade Center, limestone from the Pentagon, and soil from the Shanksville, Pennsylvania, field in which United Flight 93 crashed, the station KATC reported.
Police say an analysis of the scene along with the style the artist used in drawing the pieces attached to the memorial led them to Mr Perez.
Besides the cardboard planes, the graffiti also included a cutout of President George W. Bush with a wad of cash in his hand and a remote control.
The stabilizers on the cartoon planes featured the Eye of Providence and the initials NWO standing for the New World Order - a reference to a fringe conspiracy theory that the attacks of 9/11 were carried out by the American government.

Why is it that we have to get this information from a British source and NOT an American source??????????????
Truther moron.
Trutherism came full-on just hours after the 9.11 event, it was primed and ready-to-go by a group in France. And it was immediately embraced globally, including by people now in the US government. It was concocted by the muslims and the socialists.
It hasn’t quite replaced history, but they have come impossibly close.
One of my coworkers is a truther moron. He was spouting all this stuff about the structural integrity of the towers and how they fell etc...
I have a truther associate. Its not a conspiracy theory - its a damn cult.
Wonder when Idi Obama will reclassify 9-11 as another instance of workplace violence.
I don't get it. How is that "damaging" to the memorial?
Truthism is a religion. They refuse to believe the obvious and instead blindly believe something simply because they want to believe it.
They all share one thing in common: A hatred for all things Bush. I’ve never met one who supported him before 9/11.
What they cannot give you is a coherent motive.
His name is Perez, HOWEVER, he looks like Johnny Jihad!
I know, when he is taken to Angola, there just might be somebody very lonely, that has read this story, is still American enough, and wants to, um, befriend Perez.
So it is. And it was ready in place at the time of the attack. Part of the plan.
Prominent adminstration people, like Van Jones, are members.
Wonder if Johnny J is another illegal freeloader.

For the next two years, he will be in the state facility, complete with a/c, cable. 3 hots and a cot.
I live just north of Detroit in a literal melting pot of ethnic diversity and I see men with beards all the time, just as everyone else has.
But when I see these long raggedy beards on young men of middle east descent, and I haven't seen but a few, my islamic radar goes on high alert......
Weird Beard Koranimal wannabe
The difference being that Truthers have to contend with videos of the actual events.
Sounds like he’s really being prosecuted for a thought crime. Sure, he’s an offensive nut, but possibly 2 years incarceration? If this situation were reversed and a counter jihad activist had done something similar to a Jihadi memorial, would you support the proposed punishment? I wouldn’t and I don’t here, either
