A federal judge ruled this week that exotic dancers at a Midtown strip club are protected by labor laws and entitled to be paid at least a minimum wage.
The ruling came Tuesday in a class-action lawsuit brought by current and former dancers at Ricks Cabaret, at 50 W. 33rd St. The lawsuit against Peregrine Enterprises the subsidiary that operates the club and the clubs Houston-based parent company, charged that the strippers were denied wages and required to pay a variety of fees to the club.
The club had argued that the dancers were independent contractors....

This will lead to rampant unemployment in the stripper industry . . . Oh, wait . . .

Oh, sure, YOU try tipping them just minimum wage and see what happens (or doesn't, I should say)
So I've been told, that is.

I’d hit it
Moving on to more boring stuff....
Once the business has to pay them minimum wage (which I do not object to) making them no longer independent contracters, things are going to get complicated as regards a host of federal laws, including ObummerCare.
As an independent contractor, I don’t see how they can be such as the requirements are currently written. Most obvious, as IC they must be allowed to work whenever they please, not subject to a schedule the club sets. You know that is not the case.

If they must be paid minimum wage...convert them to contract workers and let them keep what they earn in tips.

well, if minimum wage laws apply to strippers, shouldn’t discrimination laws apply also?
what about hiring old, fat ugly strippers with missing teeth?
where’s their justice?

So they have to take a cut in pay?
It is not uncommon if you are even reasonably good to make $500 in a four hour hour shift.

Yeah, and many times, those were the ones I paid a cover charge to see. OTOH, I’ve seen some that are prettier than most supermodels and Hollywood starlets.

I was thinking the same thing.
What stripper would want to be known as working for min wage?

Great, more judge made law. How about a return to the sanctity of contract? We need somebody in the Justice Department to bring out the big bat of the Commerce Clause.

Not to worry...they will Unionize, and then, the only strippers available that you can afford will be Illegal Aliens (when they have Amnesty, they, too, will Unionize".
Ultimately, if you wanna see strippers in strip-clubs, you'll have to go "Offshore".....

Not only that, but “sexual harassment” laws were in abeyance, I should think, when they were “independent contractors” but would apply now, I would assume.
