Iowa law enforcement officials are debating the wisdom of granting gun permits to blind people. The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa law doesn't allow sheriffs to deny a permit to carry a gun in public based on physical ability. Some sheriffs have been granting gun permits to people with visual impairments while others have been denying them. Blind people and other Iowans can obtain the permits for carrying a weapon in public because of changes to state law that took effect in 2011. Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people from obtaining weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Should blind people be allowed to vote?
“Legally blind” people aren’t always completely blind. James Thurber drew some of his best cartoons while he was legally blind.
Blind People Are Granted Gun Permits in Iowa?...So what? We have a president who can’t find his ass with both hands!
Rights based on disabilities? I'm thinking....
So let's consider intelligence as a disability. I think hereditary and learned stupidity can certainly be labelled a disability today. It certainly limits what an individual is capable of. Voting and guns?
I might be persuaded to consider limitations on gun rights based on intelligence IF a civics test and license were required in order to qualify for voting rights. If you can't: Name 3 branches of government, 4 SC Justices, Speaker of House, Senate Maj Leader, VP, SoS and answer some basic US history questions....all in english, you fail. You don't get to vote.
If we have brail ATM machines and deposit machines at the drive through bank lanes, thus showing that blind people apparently have driver’s licenses, why not give gun permits to blind people?
My quest is why are permits being required at all in Iowa, or are these ‘concealed carry’ permits?
Maybe someone can help out by inventing liberal seeking bullets.
About half the country is blind and they all voted. Some of them, more than once.
Instantly reminded of the scene from Blues Brothers with Ray Charles shooting at the kid attempting to steal from his store.
I read about this story on another venue. The police chiefs daughter is legally blind and wants a gun permit. Good for her!
Breaks my heart to see a kid that young going bad
Anyone who thinks about this for a minute or two can easily envision circumstances where a totally blind woman could effectively use a firearm to defend herself.
(Say, by jamming the muzzle of her pistol into the side of the person attacking her and pulling the trigger.)
So, why would being blind be a reason to strip Second Amendment rights from someone?
People who are not blind can still carry guns at night, when they cannot see well.
I’m surprised so few actually see the root of this. Bureaucracies have somewhat arbitrary standards of what constitutes a “handicap.” (Think of all those people exploiting handicapped parking.) Many people who are “legally blind” easily have enough vision to handle a self-defense firearm, and some are even able to hunt.
Actually there is no Constitutional authority to deny them one. Seems counterintuitive, but if you were in charge of issuing permits, on what basis would you deny them?

Agreed, also for home invasion purposes as well, a Blind person with a shotgun could be valuable for protecting their life.
There are also people who are blind in that their eyes are clouded/blurry but can recognize shapes even though they are listed as “legally blind”...
Jane Hudson with Disability Rights Iowa said keeping legally blind people from obtaining weapon permits would violate the Americans with Disabilities Act.
So they can get drivers licenses?
This is such a nonsense statement.
Yes people with disabilities need some protections under the law.
But you can not be an airline pilot. You can not be a street police officer. No one is going to hire you to take kids photo’s.
So if one of these people shoot an innocent bystander can they use the ADA as a defense?? Is common sense no longer allowed in America?
James Thurber drew some of his best cartoons while he was legally blind.
It might just be me, but I think the chances a cartoon will cause a death is slightly unlikely...........
Should blind people be allowed to vote?
Sure. Just not sure what one thing has to do with the other...
