Last night, Mayor Bloomberg of New York City was heard to issue a big gulp.
The stridently anti-gun Mayor, who wishes to impose his hoplophobic vision on the rest of the country, was defeated soundly, and twice, as two of his Colorado-based cronies were both defeated in the first recall votes in Colorado State Legislature history.
Both Senator John Morse -- himself the Senate Majority Leader -- and Senator Angela Giron voted for onerous and far-reaching gun control measures in Colorado in March of 2013, including a ban on the purchase of normal-capacity magazines (HB1224).
The reaction by gun-owners in the firearms-friendly state of Colorado was swift and fierce. Four legislators were targeted for recall, and of those, two were successfully placed on the recall ballot. When it became apparent that the threat of a successful recall of these two was imminent, Mayors Against Illegal Guns (a group of mayors organized by Mayor Bloomberg) became very involved in the race, sending a yet-undisclosed amount of money. Mayor Bloomberg personally sent one third of a million dollars to assist in the effort to keep these two legislators save from the recall. This was to become a test of the power of M.A.I.G., and was also shaping up to be an endorsement or rejection of further state-level gun control legislation throughout the nation.
The playing-field for this vote was very uneven and tilted towards the anti-gun side. MAIG and their partners outspent the pro-gun forces six-to-one, and very liberal voting laws -- allowing a person who had only lived in the state 22 days, and who declared a mere *intention* to move into one of the competitive districts -- were allowed to vote. Reports of students carrying backpacks of ballots started emerging during the voting process.
There are things to be quite concerned about, though. The permissive voting laws in Colorado, allowing who are not even residents of a district to vote in that district, are utterly wrong and completely unfair and must be immediately rescinded.
Despite all the near-fraudulent actions, and the money spent by anti-gun individuals and forces, Morse lost by a 49-51 percent margin, and -- somewhat surprisingly -- Giron lost by a 44-56 percent margin.
Mayor Bloomberg, a politician notorious for banning large sodas in New York City -- his widely-ridiculed 'Big Gulp Ban' -- and other obnoxious, excessive and invasive proposals, must be feeling quite chagrined this morning. His best efforts at spreading the New York City disease of central government control in every aspect of a persons life, has been repudiated, especially with regards to the Second Amendment.
Perhaps Bloomberg can assuage his feelings by proposing legislation that limits the number of squares of toilet paper New York City residents can wipe their asses with. That should make him feel a little better.
Excellent recap, dear Laz, thank you!
Well, I was hoping for more of an editorial, but yes, it’s a recap. A heavily-editorialized one, but still a simple recap. It cannot be considered one of my best works. I did want to factor in the Bloomberg angle, and how this was also a direct defeat for him, though.
Thanks FRiend. :)
Oh, it is clearly editorial and beautifully done, as we have come to expect from you, dear Laz! I said “recap” because it sums up the futility of the liberal attempt to silence the 2nd amendment.
I love you.
Run Alamo-Girl, run!
lolz
I don’t tweet or facebook, so I will show approval for your contribution metaphysically (I’m sure you feel it) and through the BTTT process.
Thanks LMan,
There is something to smile about on this morning!
Now, go out and honk your horn at ever Lib you see today!
Excellent reporting, Laz! FINALLY some good news to read about, for a change.
***smooch***
LOLOL!
Good job Laz. I’ve shared this article with some friends.
+1 for using the word “hoplophobic.”
:)
So perfect!
THIS is the sort of thing that effects political change.
Now, they need to make sure they can elect appropriate people to take the place of these goons!
Great piece Laz!
Big Gulp! LMAO!!!
I love it!
Remember.
I’ve got my eye on you.
