President Barack Obama will take some credit for a possible diplomatic breakthrough on Syria's chemical weapons stockpile in an address to Americans on Tuesday, but will keep pushing Congress to approve military force, White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
The White House said Syria's recent acceptance of a Russian proposal to give up its chemical weapons came about because of the U.S. threat of strikes, Carney told MSNBC.
"We see this as potentially a positive development and we see this as a clear result of the pressure that has been put on Syria," Carney said, when asked for the White House reaction to new reports that Syria will cede control of its stockpile.

Good sum-up. You’ll enjoy today’s American Spectator article of Obama as Capt. Queeg. take a look-see.
yes because now bath house has to figure out another way to help his terrorist brothers.
Another Nobel Peace Prize on the way? 0 is a peaceful Marxist after all...
All they need is a Congressional approval and they will manufacture a new reason to strike. Then it is Katy bar the door.
They have to do it because the Saudis demand it.
And with Syria, our policy yesterday was to support the overthrow of Assad. Today, we must protect Assad to ensure that his chemical weapons are secured by 'international inspectors'. At some point in the very near future, Assad will be arguing how the rebels are preventing him from complying and asking the US to enforce an arms embargo against them.
In my wildest dreams, I cannot come up with a worse statement than the one our Secretary of State made yesterday.
and the media will spew it forth as truth and gush about the leadership qualities of our wonderful president....
Obama is buying time to sell the American public.
Will there be another CW strike?
And to the 64,000 dollar question. Who gets the blame when Syria gets rid of all their chem weapons except one and then uses it and kills a couple of thousand Syrians?
Now you have to blame the rebels because Obama was instrumental in getting rid of Syrias WMD. Who supports the rebels? Obama. Who gets the blame? George Bush you racist!
Watch Assad and Putin stretch this out for months and months. We’ll see if they ever turn over any chemical weapons to the “international community”.
2) The Obama mal-Administration immediately distances itself from said bone-headed statement, and Kerry himself begins backpedaling like an unbalanced unicyclist on speed.
3) The Russians exploit Kerrys bone-headed statement by cynically putting forth a plan which exactly mirrors said bone-headed statement.
4) The Obama mal-Administration falls hook, line and sinker for the cynical ploy by the Russians; even going so far as to begin steps towards taking credit for opening the door to a diplomatic solution.
By this time tomorrow, the ENTIRE thing will all be part of Obamas brilliant plan to bring peace to the Middle East.
Of course, when the Syrians fail to turn over all their chemical weapons to the international community, Mr. Obama will be right there to remind us that he never really liked the idea in the first place, but that he had no choice but to pursue it since his predecessor, George W. Bush, left behind such a mess."
brilliant.. man is that spot on..
He might be able to pull that off. Except that last week, when arguing for the strikes, he explicitly said that they had exhausted EVERY diplomatic option possible.
SO I guess he was lying last week when trying to get people to support his unnecessary bombing campaign. I’m sure glad the house and senate didn’t run back and pass the authorization — or Obama would have already killed people for no reason.
How small does a ‘victory’ have to be, when for the 1st time in American History, a sitting U.S. President backed down in the face of a Russian Premier?
It took a while for me to get a chance to read it, but it is quite good. An apt comparison.
Thanks.
You ain’t seen nothing yet.
“Yes, it was my suggestion to Mr. Putin that got the ball rolling, and I am looking forward to a second Nobel Peace Prize before I leave office.”
