Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel Peace Prize By: Tal Kopan July 15, 2013 10:41 AM EDT
A Swedish sociology professor has nominated Edward Snowden for the Nobel Peace Prize, saying that awarding the former NSA employee would correct Nobel Committees mistake in giving the award to President Barack Obama in 2009.
According to a translation of the letter published by the Daily Mail and RT.com, Umeå University professor Stefan Svallfors wrote the committee that Snowden has made the world safer in releasing information about United States surveillance.
Edward Snowden has - in a heroic effort at great personal cost - revealed the existence and extent of the surveillance, the U.S. government devotes electronic communications worldwide. By putting light on this monitoring program - conducted in contravention of national laws and international agreements - Edward Snowden has helped to make the world a little bit better and safer, Svallfors wrote.
Referencing the Nuremberg trials of Nazis, Svallfors says following orders is not an excuse for acting against human rights and freedom, and he praised Snowdens courage in leaking the information.
Svallfors also noted that Obama was a past recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, which he called a correctable mistake.
The decision to award the 2013 prize to Edward Snowden would - in addition to being well justified in itself - also help to save the Nobel Peace Prize from the disrepute that incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision to award U.S. President Barack Obama 2009 award, Svallfors said.

They have no credibility unless they request Obama return his
I keep on taunting the libs here about when they will take Obama’s back.
So was “Tookie.” Didn’t work out well for him.
Wouldn’t that just poke Obama in the eye (Russia too?)
Um, It’s Chelsea to you bub.......
Humph .... Snowden deserves it more than Obama (and that’s not to say either one actually deserves it).
That wouldn’t help really. Arafat made them a laughing stock long ago and only fools have regarded them seriously since.
Perhaps it is more accurately referred to as “The Alfred E. Newman” peace prize.
If I were in a position to do so, I would second that nomination. Of course I’d have to have a scintilla of respect for the Nobel peace prize in the furst place to do so. I believe they gave one to Yasar Arafat once.
Will Obama present it to Snowden at the Stockholm ceremony?
Well the peace prize doesn't mean much anymore, but I'm sure Snowden can use the cash that goes with it.
Snowden deserves on a lot more than the narcissistic incompetent tryant wannabe turd in the white house.
You’re right. Awarding the NPP to the former NSA employee will never really correct the Nobel Committees mistake, but recalling it from Obama would help to show they are sincere in acknowledging their rush to award the prize solely to make a political statement. They need to clean up their own mess now. They longer they delay, the worse they look.
Twas meaningless long before then...
he deserves it every bit as much as obama maybe more
1993 Yassir Arafart (for pretending to make peace with Israel)
2008: Muhammad El Baradi (Chairman of IAEA, who did absolutely nothing to stop the proliferation of Nuclear Arms in the world).
2009 Baraekh Hussein Obama (was not George Bush)
2013 Snowden?
The Swedes certainly know what they're doing, eh?
Well - Snowdon has probably done at least as much as Obama to promote peace.
Um, I think you're confusing Edward Snowden with Bradley Manning. As far as I know Snowden wants to retain his original equipment.
