Virginias National Guard will provide health insurance and other benefits to same-sex couples, Gov. Robert F. McDonnell said Thursday, one day after a state delegate urged him to defy a new Pentagon directive to treat all marriages equally.
In a letter to McDonnell this week, Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William) warned that providing the benefits would violate the state constitutional ban on gay marriage.
As Commander of the Virginia National Guard[,] what will you do to secure that the spirit and letter of the [state] Constitution regarding marriage will be upheld? Marshall wrote.
McDonnell, a social conservative who has walked a fine line on gay-rights issues as governor, said he would abide by the Pentagon policy that Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced in August.

Virginia...the newest Blue State.
Sadly.
I thought McDonnell was a conservative? WTF? Is everyone being infected by these sodomites?
Is that in keeping with state law? Does Virginia currently offer benefits to gay couples where one is a state employee?
His pet poodle is Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who apparently thought that he was a shoe-in to become McDonnell's successor, but got his applecart upset by Conservatives at the state GOP convention, who chose Cuccinelli as the Republican candidate for governor. Since then, Bolling has been working against Republicans by affiliating himself with Terry McAuliffe and implying that he's going to make an independent run for governor (to split the vote and help his new buddy).
Disgusting disappointment. How does Cucinelli look?
Each state has different criteria for appointing the commander or general officers. In some states, no prior military experience is required. This at the governor’s whim. If a NG commander follows the pentagon on this policy against the laws of the state, it could be halted by the governor - thus setting up a funding battle with the Federal Government. Most NG units have supplemental income to finance units via the Federal government. Maybe a governor can have the units transferred out of state if a showdown demands compliance with breaking state laws for state employees whose jobs are partially funded by the federal government....
Virginia... the new New York. Virginia... “it’s FABULOUS”!
11 points behind the satan candidate... mcauliffe.
Proof that liberals sow destruction wherever they migrate. Virginia was ruined by all the Marylanders who moved there to escape the results of their policies...their aim is to turn Virginia into another Maryland.
No. Virginia does not recognize same-sex unions of any type in any way. . .
You make an excellent point,Mark.
We see this happening in New Hampshire and now in Texas where it’s true that many Californians are attracted to the Lone Star State, but they all bring their politics with them.
Yes... we should separate at some point... the union is now unworkable... but we will probably just allow cancer to eat the republic into haiti.
Every fricking time. Minnesotans are moving into N & S Dakota and guess what? They're demanding the same crapola that caused them to leave in the first place. It's mind-boggling.
If we had a truly federalism system, everything would balance themselves out over time. But because liberals want federal laws for everything, this entire nation will become a liberal hellhole. No wonder people are renouncing their U.S. citizenship in droves.
Then recognizing them in the National Guard should be illegal. The Guard is no different from any other state employee unless they get called into active service with the army. They answer to the governor, not the president, and their rules should comply with state law and not federal policy.
Liar, traitor, and other assorted insults.
Hello Gov. McCauliff!!! OMG....are there NO DECENT REPUBLICANS LEFT???
I agree. But McDonnell dropped his conservative “skin” soon after getting elected. . .
