WILLINGBORO It seems ripped from the pages of Dickens: A hungry child approaches the school cafeteria worker, meal in hand. The worker promptly throws the meal in the trash and sends the child away unfed. Why? The child's parents have let the lunch account run dry.

p.s. My sister had that Partridge family lunchbox and thermos. I was soooo jealous.
It's the "Education" system, not the "food service" system.
It's a huge case of government scope-creep.
How many tax dollars would be saved if all of the bureaucracies associated with feeding kids in school were eliminated?
He or she is your kid, pack them a friggin' lunch.
Liberals have little use for children whose parents don’t pay into the liberal coffers when requited.
The American people strongly endorse hot school lunches even if they taste bad. Former U.S. Rep. Bruce Alger, R-TX, was voted out in 1964 in part because he was a long-term critic of the high costs of the program. People want their “lunches”.
That’s how it was in the ‘60s, no token, no lunch, I was always losing mine.
NJ has no free lunch program?
or did the governor transfer it all to his lunch account?
They throw it in the trash? Seriously?
and these people are allowed to keep their jobs?
If your kids are forced to be there all day, they should feed your kids. Come to think of it the school should provide all the school supplies and uniforms too.
The kids/parents aren’t given a choice in going to school, then the inmates have to be fed
Along the lines of “Why does God need a starship?”
Why do people on food stamps need free school lunches?
Are their parents too lazy to take some of the free food and pack it for them in the morning?
As a teacher—I understand this question. free Lunches are given—the kids—most of them Can pay and cell phones and video games—expensive shoes and such—they eat the desert or power bar and throw the resst away—all the good food that could fee starving kids in africa—is in the waste. Go to any school with such a program and the tossed out food will make you weep. Granted a few of the kids—mostly illegals—do eat the food because they need it—but its only a small number—most gos to the trash can. My solution! continue the free program but—no sweets, no powerbars—give them oatmeal only with a shot of milk. Maybe add some raisins or apples slices—but no cool food—that will be for paid lunchs. Oatmeal is cheap and good for you. That’s what they should serve—not the same lunch as the paid kids.
Don’t you know that food is now a right? So is housing, education, utilities, medical care, and even phones. If you are irresposible and have children that you cannot afford to raise, then someone else must be forced to pay for their care. It’s the new American way.
Meanwhile, the students usually pick out only the most carby of the foods to eat, especially the boys. The girls are much more prone to eat the salads and veggies. Fruits are often used as missiles through the air and other foods are used for non-eating purposes as well. The waste tossed into the garbage cans (and picked up off the floor) is enormous.
Here is a sample lunch menu. Never mind the high-falutin' descriptions of the food. It still looks like crud on a shingle:
That’s crazy, not a lot of variety either
But in Boston, ALL kids, with NO means testing, will get breakfast and lunch “free”, courtesy of federal taxpayers.
“Boston public schools will begin serving free lunches to all students this school year even if families have the financial means to pay, school officials are expected to announce Tuesday.” http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/09/02/boston-public-schools-will-offer-free-lunches-all-students/2aaUy5sxJjIak9ndGDHxkJ/story.html
Well, what was I saying? That’s why I posted an actual menu, to show how crummy the food is. I feel bad for the kids. Why don’t moms make their kids lunches any more? I’m sure the home-made lunches would be more nutritious.
What do they think they are? Some "mean republican" listing ketchup as a vegetable?
At least Ronald Reagan didn't claim ketchup as the main entrée.
Well, if they force you to be there everyday, they should at least feed you... something.
lol
Yes, and moms should make their lunches, but a lot of schools ban that because Johnny was jealous that Abe got a pudding cup and started a fight.
lol
I grew up poor, eldest in family of 4 plus parents, now dad had a good job as a boiler maker for a steel plant. Made decent money but with 6 mouths to feed, house and clothe, and there was no such thing as food stamps then. We took our lunches in a brown bag, and got a nickle milk. My bus ticket and my half pint of milk cost a whopping 50 per day. I ate bologna sandwiches daily from 1st to 12th grade. Never saw a cafteria until HS. We ate at our desk in K-8. Then went out and played for 30 minutes unless it was raining, then we went to the gym and ran laps.
That is so true! I remember eating "government surplus" cheese once. We had it brought to a shelter when our neighborhood had to evacuate during a storm. It's not often I have a cheese I don't like but that was truly noxious stuff.
If the government got into bottled water, I'm sure they'd screw that up somehow too.
