If you had to stop and think about it for a day, would you still get that giant dragon tattoo across your back? That’s the question being raised by health regulators in our nation’s capital, where Washington, DC officials are considering a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before getting a tattoo or body piercings. "The licensee or operator of a body art establishment shall ensure that no tattoo artist applies any tattoo to a customer until after twenty-four (24)hours have passed since the customer first requested the tattoo," reads the language of proposed language of new regulations from Washington DC’s Department of Health.

No one got them in my youth - the 1970s. When the 1980s hit, they were connected here in NYC with the AIDs epidemic. I still worry about people going into those tattoo parlors.
I’ve seen the Star Of David tattooed on some idiot. Don’t folks know that the nazis tattooed camp victims?
Recently saw what would have been a lovely young girl had she not been inked out of that description.

Also, employers in white collar office jobs hate seeing those tattoos.
Some are tasteful, some hideous; some discreet, and some outrageous. As I mentioned above in my comment #50, a lot of them have lost whatever beauty they once had.
But you know what? Just because they're ugly as hell doesn't give the government the power to stop them from making stupid decisions.
Not their tattoos, many of which gross me out
Nor their musical tastes, which generally suck
Nor their clothing, which often looks like hell
Nor their personal hygiene, which often disgusts me
Nor their political views, which I may disagree with
Nor their religious views, which I may disagree with
Nor their social customs, which I may find repulsive...
etc.
The government can just stay the hell out of our lives for those sorts of things. Just because somebody does something you think is "unattractive" or looks like a "side show", doesn't mean we all have to give up yet another right of self-determination to the damn government. The Founders didn't feel they had to enumerate a "Right To Make Stupid Choices", they took it as a given.
You can't legislate common sense. As long as folks don't get directly in my face and block my way, I can look the other way. And I do.
I recommend it.
Nothing says “i’m a skanky ho” quite like a tattoo or even more so a tongue piercing. Hate me if you wish.
Just my opinion.
When the freak-show folks go to get a job, they'll find out that maybe the tattoo or piercing wasn't such a hot idea.
From such experience comes wisdom.
I've always felt that a body modification should reflect something important about the person.
Not all tattoos connote "skanky ho", although certainly some do.
A tongue piercing, OTOH, is a pretty clear sign of... something. I consider them tasteless (pun unavoidable).
Everybody is a freelancer these days so they do what they want. Cultural memory must be abolished and same for religious memories even if you have them for generations and they have penetrated your DNA.

I really despise body piercings and tattoos, especially on girls.
I see lots of conservative Christians with tatoos in California.
We went to a wedding a few years back, The bride is a cop and the groom rides a Harley and is part of the Black Sheep Harley Davidsn’s for Christ.
Funniest wedding guests. Half of them were covered in tatoos and half clean cut cop types.
Christians in California are different than the ones I grew up iwith in Texas. Many are a down and dirty bunch with very strong faith. They don’t care about appearance. They serve Christ in rough places. I admire a lot of them!
why not a waiting period of a week for an ABORTION?

Last month, I came across that the future King George V got a tat in Japan when he was in the RN, around 1880. Lion and Dragon, iirc.
There's a current thread about tattoo regret becoming a trend Down Under.
I was a teenager in the late 60s and I never knew anyone with a tattoo, and I was wild and crazy in the Bay area. When the 70s rolled around, my life had changed, no more wild/crazy (THANK GOD!).
My point is not that Jews and Christians don’t have tattoos, lol. Or that makes them “bad people.” It’s that they are taboo according to the customs of these ancient religions. It’s not my fault that they are, they just are.
I got separated from USAF active duty on 20/12/63 at McGuireAFB, NJ, upon return from a tour in Italy. I flew back to Detroit that night. My parents and I were sitting around the kitchen table; I was telling my tales of derring-do. It got pretty warm in the kitchen, so I took off my blouse. Then I loosened my tie, then I took off my uniform shirt. I was sitting there, drinking a Stroh’s in my t-shirt. My mother then asked me why I never got a tat. I said, “Ma, if I got one, I thought you would’ve killed me.” She allowed that she could’ve lived with a shamrock or a harp, as long as my t-shirt sleeve covered it.
You all know my views on these mutilations.
