NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — It came out of nowhere.
A man allegedly went on a rampage in Union Square on Wednesday afternoon and left a complete stranger brain-dead in the process.
Police said that the attack may have been a hate crime.
Friends of Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, were shocked to hear about the random act of violence that left the gentle, retired train conductor in a coma, CBS 2′s Dave Carlin reported on Friday.
“I don’t believe that. I don’t know why that happened. He is very nice,” Igor Sapozhnikov said.
Babbitt was minding his own business as he walked through the crowd near the chess boards in Union Square when a man made a hateful announcement and began his rampage, witnesses said.
“He said ‘the next white person who walks by I’m going to [expletive],’” one woman said. “His fist went in and the man’s head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground.”
The man continued his rampage before demanding to see police officers.
“He stood there and hit two more people and asked for the police to come,” Michael Benson said.
Stunned witnesses counted a total of three people attacked. The suspect, Lashawn Marten, 31, remained at the scene until police arrived.
Babbitt was on the ground with blood flowing from his head. Nearby were two other victims icing their faces.

When you scream out “I hate white people” and try to kill someone.... it MIGHT be a hate crime?
It is called “situational awareness”. I practice it all the time. Keep your head moving to detect anything out of place or people acting or sounding abnormal. Body language screams when you are looking for it.

Yes, he was sucker punched. One thing you must always be in NYC is completely alive to the tips of your toes for wild animals. You cannot let your guard down. Even then, you might still be set up for prey. I was never mugged in the 27 years I lived there. Luck combined with great awareness. I always kept an eye out one block ahead of me.

Problem with a lot of these crimes is they are “ambush”
type events. The “Obama’s boy” that commits the crime
does virtually nothing to indicate they are a threat to
you until your back is turned and they hit you.....and they
hit you as hard as possible with the express intent of
knocking you out instantly. Even if you are armed with
a gun there is no way to respond to this type of attack if
it is initiated successfully. The only option a rational
white person has is to maintain FULL awareness and not allow
a black person to come within 15-20 feet. Ambush attacks such as these are impossible to predict, difficult to prepare for and defending against them requires both situational awareness and to an extent luck. The best bet is NEVER travel alone and unarmed.
These events are making a case for widespread civil disobedience in support of the Constitutional right to defend oneself in the 2nd Amendment.
