Analysis: Obama won't say it, but vote on Syria has high stakes for his presidency
Reuters ^ | Sept 7, 2013 | By Roberta Rampton and Caren Bohan

(Reuters) - It seems that everyone in Washington is talking about it except President Barack Obama: When Congress votes on the administration's request to use military force in Syria, the future of his presidency could well be on the line.

A defeat, a distinct possibility, would hobble Obama in affairs both foreign and domestic, particularly if fellow Democrats collaborate in it.

It will hurt him at a critical juncture, as he confronts not only Syria, but the nuclear activities of Iran and North Korea, another round of battles with Republicans over fiscal issues, an immigration bill, and a possibly difficult nomination fight over a new chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Using Obama's presidency as an argument as Congress ponders a resolution authorizing military action is off-limits for the administration - it would make the debate about Obama and cost the president votes from some Republicans he is counting on.

"My credibility is not on the line," Obama said at a news conference in Stockholm on Wednesday, five days after he announced he would seek congressional authorization for a strike on Syria over an August 21 chemical weapons attack in that country.

"The international community's credibility is on the line. And America and Congress' credibility is on the line."

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

But if ever there was an "elephant" in a room, the Obama legacy is it.

A 'no' vote would be a "catastrophe" for Obama...

Not only no, but hell no we will not go to war to save Obama's "credibility!"

The petulant narcissist is not to be trifled with ... the temper tantrum that one will throw is going to be epic.

"My credibility is not on the line," Obama said

It's nice to know that Obama's credibility is on the line. If a "no" vote, or even cancelling the vote, means Obama becomes a lame duck, that will be the best thing that has happened to America in these five terrible years.

If Obama is hobbled, he can’t play golf. Oh the Humanity!

Let’s see. Rooters thinks that Obama will be MORE popular with the anti-war left if he goes in and starts bombing women and children in support of a gang of church-burning, Christian killing Mohammedan fanatics?

The more evil he does, the more popular he will be? Even though at least 2/3 of the country are against this war?

I hope all this craziness just means that the Obama worshippers feel their backs against the wall, and are absolutely desperate. But who knows?

I’ll take a somewhat contrarian view - I’m starting to think that the won will use the congress as a fig leaf to slowly back away. Putin called his bluff and now he needs a way out.

Maybe a “NO” vote would force the President to actually work WITH congress.

I think freepers need to lead the charge to ensure this bill makes it to a vote. Obamas war plan voted down by a huge margin will have an impact

I want a recorded house vote.

Nothing but loss in it for democrats and nothing but gain for republicans who vote no. The democrats can throw their president overboard or support a war than the vast majority don’t want. The republicans can vote no and show that they are the party of restraint.

Might give the congress the spine to buck the imperial president on other crucial matters.

He’s going to shift the argument to call for condemnation from the UN and the EU with armed intervention on the table if Syria doesn’t forswear future uses of gas. Wait for it.

There is a good chance you are right. He will be hailed (by the usual sources) as contemplative, judicious, collaborative, wise, bipartisan and forgiving. Few could show such calm under so much pressure to “evolve” his thinking, while warning that another use of chemical warfare will come with swift and sure justice. It kind of creeps me out just to type that drivel.

Meh. This is America. Regardless of what happens, no one will remember in three months. We’ll be on to some other disaster. Except for here and a couple other places does anyone talk about the IRS, Benghazi, etc? Nope. And they won’t talk about this. And when 2014 rolls around, this might as well be a million years ago.

Sadly, that is the nature of America.

10-4 on that. Maybe the Republicans in Congress might get the spine to do things like defund Obamacare and such. Heck, even pass a law to kill it, and make Obama veto it. It is becoming generally unpopular enough that perhaps it could happen.

Thank you, Sal. Today is the day. All in here.

Obama is likely done, seen by the universe to have tweaked the whisker of a lion, and finally, it roared back. He can’t un-ring that bell.
