The Millennial Generation Is Abandoning Liberalism
American Thinker ^ | 09/04/2013 | Chriss Street

The media claimed that conservatives must become more moderate or face permanent irrelevancy after the supposedly solid liberal millennial generation of 18-29 year olds that overwhelmingly supported reelection of Barack Obama.

These dire warnings reminded me of the media geniuses who proclaimed after Jimmy Carter's presidential victory in 1976 that the 18-29 year olds of the Baby Boomer generation would always vote as a liberal bloc. Four years later, Baby Boomers abandoned liberalism and began reliably voting as Ronald Reagan conservatives for the next three decades. As Millennial support of President Obama has plummeted this year, it is liberalism that may again be facing decades of irrelevancy.

On Election Day in 2008, 37.4% of incoming freshman women and 30.5% men identified themselves as liberals or leftists, the most in 35 years. This corresponded four years later to 33% of Millennials describing themselves on Election Day 2012 as liberals. Given that Barack Obama lost a majority of the over 29 year old vote by 50% to 48%, it was his 61% to 36% support among 18-29 year olds that swung the election in his favor.

The media proclaimed that Obama's reelection was proof the Millennials would power liberalism to dominate American politics for the many decades.

Support for Obama has fallen by 9% since Election Day, but it is the 15% collapse in support by Millennials that is driving Obama's fall. Furthermore, first-year college students self-identifying as liberals has also dropped by five points to 26.4% for men and 32.4% for women. The media failed to understand that after the 18-29 year olds of the Baby Boomer generation swept Jimmy Carter into the White House in 1976, initial liberal views of youth do not necessarily lock a generation into a lifetime of liberal voting.

The current younger generation is breathlessly ignorant. They don’t know liberty, they don’t know history, and they don’t know they don’t know, though they probably think Disney’s Pocahontas was the first to say that.

We're trying our best in the NHN household. My 11 YO son is very conservative, and I continue to teach him history as the opportunity arises.

When he was in 1st grade, his teacher remarked to me that "he knew more about The Alamo than I did."

This summer's history lesson revolved around Route 66, the "Mother Road", as our vacation spent a few days on IH-40 from Amarillo to Kingman AZ. Of course, we stopped at the "Standin' on the Corner" park in Winslow, AZ. There's a statue of a man standing on the corner, with a flatbed Ford parked nearby.

Since it was just the two of us for most of the trip, we had many hours to just talk, and he asked dozens of questions about the history and significance of Route 66.

I can't recall a more enjoyable vacation in my entire life. A week in Southern Utah, six national parks/monuments, horesback riding in Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon, canyoneering outside Zion NP. The trip back took us through Williams (train to Grand Canyon), Sedona, and Tombstone (more history).

They’ll always believe that socialism works, but the right people have never run it.

Millennial Techies are the worst because they believe that the missing piece....modern computer technology....is the thing that will FINALLY allow Socialism to be run properly.

Just as soon as SAP releases that Five Year Plan Management module...

The young people might be leaning away from liberalism, but they are headed toward apathetic primal decadence. Every man does what is right in his own eyes.

That’s because they realize that a third party elects Democrats (hopefully, they realize it).

(hopefully, they realize it).

No, they don't. They know about stuff like the Pirate Party in Europe and they think it's pretty cool.

The fact that we don't operate under a Parliamentary system was left out of their high-school textbooks apparently.

He’s lucky to have you! And vice versa :)

I homeschooled my offspring and it turned out well. Sensible, conservative, employable, thrifty, devout. So there are glorious exceptions!

Take it eeeea-sy! /eagles

After going 52% Nixon versus 46% McGovern in 1972, the under 30 vote went 51% for Carter against Ford and this was after Watergate and the pardon, when Carter was seen as the more conservative by many Americans, the boomer vote of 1976 was nothing like the 66% youth margin for Obama in 2008.

“...breathlessly ignorant.”

I agree. How can such a people remain free?

The yute are deceived and buy the lies. This cannot last indefinitely. I expect an economic downturn due to the liberal fiscal policies. Dependents of the state will starve and pay the penalty for their lack of foresight. Then all those guns and all that ammo will permit some to protect themselves from the massive civic unrest that will follow.

The question remains: who will be the bigger threat? Rioters or the govt which try to restore order?

If you are 18 and you aren’t a liberal, there is something wrong with your heart. If you are 22 and you are still a liberal, there is something wrong with your head. I forget who said that, or something similar.

Except that isn't really true in voting.

In 1972, with the GOP running Nixon, with the draft and the Vietnam War, 13,000 people arrested in DC, all the 1960s stuff that people remember, the under 30 vote went 52% FOR NIXON, 46% democrat.

With SAP you would also have to apply 1,000 note corrections, decipher the German comments in the code, and learn how to understand the mispronunciation of the English language by SAP Support as your calls get routed around the world.

Unfortunately the same is true for all software companies.

I find that most people from "Generation Y" I run into are low empathy Hedonists and/or subclinical sociopaths only interested in what is "in it" for them personally.

If there ever was a "Me" Generation.... hooo boy this is it!

Just like the “Singularity” replacing God.
“So you expect, within your lifetime, to develop 100% accurate models of the human brain AND the ability to download human biological software into computers AND that we’ll have the memory and power to run the simulated you forever ...”
They expect to create immortality in their lifetimes (i.e., they’ll never die), though such a thing has never existed before and may not come to be.
But believing in God, which does answer how the universe was created, is worthy of derision.

If you’re old and liberal, you have no brains.

Worse . . . you're absolutely looney. Or stunted.

I have a friend, 61, who spouts off the weirdest ideas. Even when you try to argue, she is too wedded to her defenses. An activist in her younger days, she never outgrew it. Very distorted thinking.

Her mother & sister are the same way. Liberal households tend to be female-dominated.
