Surface cooling in equatorial Pacific drives decade-long pause in global temperature rise.
A new study adds to mounting evidence that cooling in the tropical Pacific Ocean is the cause of the global warming hiatus, a slow-down in the rise of average temperatures that began around 1998.
The eastern equatorial Pacific is well known to have an outsize influence on global weather. Years-long ocean trends such as El Niño and La Niña cause alternate warming and cooling of the sea surface there, with effects on monsoons and temperatures around the world. Now a modelling study by researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, indicates that a decadal La Niña-like cooling trend affecting as little as 8% of Earths surface can explain the slower rise in global temperatures.
The equatorial Pacific cooling turns out to be strong enough to offset the general rise in temperature induced by anthropogenic greenhouse gases, says Shang-Ping Xie, a climate modeller at Scripps and co-author of the study, which is published today in Nature1. Just as importantly, he says, the model helps to explain regional trends that seem to defy the global warming hiatus, including record-breaking heat in the United States last year, and the continued decline of Arctic sea ice.
Hot topic
Scientists have explored various explanations for the hiatus, including a reduction in energy reaching Earth, attributable to a prolonged minimum in solar activity2; a decline in the amount of heat-trapping water vapour in the stratosphere3; and an increase in atmospheric levels of sun-blocking particles produced by industrial activities and volcanoes4. Previous studies have also linked Pacific cooling to the hiatus, and have suggested that as the ocean surface cools, currents deep beneath the surface are burying heat from the atmosphere5, 6...

Frogging a dead horse.

Does any one know or has heard what FEMA is preparing for in region III. A variety of info but nothing concrete may be found by Googling for it.

To accept X, one must first believe in Y.
Is this near Rio Linda?
They found a few straws to grasp. Alas, my theory of El Nino and El Nina from 20 ago has come full circle. Remember when they were barking about that? Guess they’ve pulled that rabid Chi out of the backroom.
When you readily accept models and theories that don’t work, it easy enough to make up a new one to cover up the old one.
Except that it's increasing.
Interesting that a Chinaman is flogging the scam.
They should have left “global warming” out of the report. A better angle would have been that scientists identify another factor that contributes to global climate.
Of course, to get grants, many scientists feel they must ultimately tie their research to “global warming.” This is because Congress—which holds the purse strings—reads a synopsis of all grants. Mentions of “global warming” make Congress happy, especially those members salivating over their chance to use science to justify their power grabs. To illustrate, if a study on the white fungus killing bats in the northeast can be tied to “global warming”, it is much more likely to get funding than another study which merely seeks to reveal how and why the fungus attacks bats.
More bulls#t from the masters of bullsh#t!
Global warming is happening, it’s just stopped due to the cool water in the ocean tropics.
Has that theory changed?!?!

A Chinese scholar working for the Scripps Institution, apparently, an entity almost entirely dependent on government grants for funding. It is really no surprise.
In today's fallen world, research follows the money not the science. Therefore, it is no surprise that when nature refuses to conform to the politically correct computer model, it isn't the model that is wrong. Rather, some innocent natural phenomenon — like the temperature cycle of the oceans — must take the blame.
Since the cause of recent cooling was "years-long ocean trends such as El Niño and La Niña", it logically follows that the warming that preceded it was ALSO caused by "years-long ocean trends such as El Niño and La Niña". This proves that the the global climate models are ALL WRONG. Calling Captain Agore, calling Captain Agore.

Global warming is anomaly.
Climate change is the only constant. The variation is the result of changing solar radiation.
Thanks for the ping!
