Maria Sharapova: Poster Child for Russia
American Thinker ^ | 09/02/2013 | Kim Zigfeld

Posted on 09/03/2013 6:03:14 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Maria Sharapova, the poster child (sometimes literally) for today's Russia, appears to have jumped the rails even as her country does the same. While Vladimir Putin is provoking a new cold war over Snowden and Syria, Sharapova is doing her best to match him stride for stride on and off the tennis court.

There seems to be something about some Eastern European players who, like Sharapova, leave their countries for greener pastures, something that lingers under the surface and is disturbingly malevolent. Call it guilt complex, inferiority complex, or what have you, it makes for some dramatic events.

In over four decades of operation, Women's Tennis Association has only imposed the match penalty, default for violation of the Code of Conduct, twice. Both times it was imposed on Eastern European defectors.

Irina Spîrlea, who defected from Romania to Italy, received match penalty in 1996 in Palermo, Italy for cursing out the umpire in Italian. And Anastasia Rodionova, who defected from Russia to Australia, received the match penalty in 2007 in Cincinnati, Ohio, for hitting a ball at a group of fans who were cheering for her opponent.

Neither cleaned up her act following the default. The very next year after her default, Spîrlea changed her path to intentionally bump into Venus Williams on a changeover during their semifinal match at the U.S. Open, giving rise to charges of racism in the Williams camp after Spîrlea smiled triumphantly at her box following the bump. Spîrlea then cursed out Williams, received a $5,000 fine, and went on to lose the match. Williams gained her first grand slam final.

And three years after her default, Rodionova was guilty of such gamesmanship and poor sportsmanship that fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova refused to shake her hand at the end of their second-round match at Wimbledon.

Maria Sharapova left Russia for the elite tennis training to be found in the USA, where she ultimately learned her game and decided to remain. Not satisfied with being one of the highest-paid female athletes in the world, Sharapova has started a candy business called "Sugarpova" which has her hawking artificially flavored and colored, super-expensive sticky kid's stuff in hopes of scoring a big payday. Items such as pastel-hued tennis-ball-shaped gumballs cost more than $1 per ounce.

Vladimir Putin is provoking a new cold war

I don't see it that way. I see Obama doing his very best to alienate all of our allies and sharpen discord with our enemies, and push any fence-sitters (such as Russia) into an anti-American point of view.

Putin is a patriot and a nationalist who is trying to do the best he can for Russia.
Obama is pushing the world toward war and destruction.

Well that shoots the hell out of the credibility of the rest of the article.

Was this written by a 7th grader? Really...was it?

Unfortunately par for the course considering some of the real crap I've seen at this "conservative" web site (some good stuff too, occasionally, but not much).

The article strikes of the average girl who’s catty and jealous of the attractive, successful blonde.

You can't draw parallels to a whole nation. The eastern European tennis playing chicks have been living in a special, sheltered, and isolated world since they were 4-5 years old..harsh training..they have NO sense of what's real. At least Sharapova is trying capitalism..and sometimes you fail...

At least she can play the game.. One of the biggest "busts" from Russia has been Anna Kounikova. Absolutely gorgeous..killer body..but ZERO game. And remember at Wimbledon, at few years ago, she endorsed a sports bra, and they erected huge billboards showing her rather spectacular bosom, encase in the sports bar...with the caption, "These balls don't bounce!"

Note: I searched for the pic of the billboard..couldn't find it..maybe someone else can and post it..thanks.

Agree. That sentence was patently absurd. To the contrary, Putin’s image right now is one of being somewhat statesman-like. Its Obama who is banging the war drums.

It did for me too. Obama is doing far more to provoke a cold war and maybe even a hot war.

There was clear and horrible bias in that one line.

The title has little or nothing to do with the article. Its more a teenage style snarky hit piece on Sharapova.

Its not so much that Putin has become such a great guy as the fact that we’ve (our government) become so much worse.

Maria Sharapova is an attention ho, always has been. That’s what the shrieking, and walk backs before points is all about. There is no way all that horrific noise has anything to do with rhythm. Sharapova is the most disliked woman on tour, by the other players and is extremely overrated in her abilities of the game, specifically the mental aspects. She is the wealthiest female athlete in the world and the only reason is, are the men who go nuts over her for her looks.

“but if you look beneath the surface you find some very unpleasant surprises and a great deal of sleight of hand. She is entirely self-absorbed, caring little about universal values, and she shows no sign of wanting to improve.”

Wait a minute.

Was this written about Sharapova, Obama, or Billary Clintton?

Applies to all three, although there is only one of them with ANY talent.

my thoughts, too! in fact, i kept thinking that somehow this was perhaps, very subtle, not-so-clever semi-satire...

Looks good in a bikini? Well, I guess that makes everything okay... face it, this is MARKETING. She’s a second-rate talent, that gets bouyed up by the media because she’s cute. If she looked like Martina, do you think for a second we’d even know her name? Kardashian Culture Effect.

Let’s see a photo of Kim Zigfeld and then we can evaluate her motive for writing this dreadful piece.
