John Kerry administered a diplomatic slap in the face to Britain following David Cameron's withdrawal of military support for intervention in Syria, omitting the UK from a long list of 'friends' prepared to support US actions against the Assad regime.
The diplomatic smart was made worse by Mr Kerry's pointed reference to the French as "our oldest ally" a reference that dates back to France's role supporting America against Britain in the American Revolutionary War that began in 1776.
"It matters here if nothing is done. It matters if the world speaks out in condemnation and then nothing happens," said Mr Kerry less than 24 hours after the Commons vote that forced Mr Cameron to renege on his offer to support US action.
"America should feel confident and gratified that we are not alone in our condemnation and we are not alone in our will to do something about it and to act," added Mr Kerry, making an impassioned case that the world could walk on by in the face of Assad's use of chemical weapons.

needless (and pointless) insults of our allies...(as well as leaking their defense secrets to the mass media in order to weaken or undercut them...)
they must be teaching something new in Diplomacy class these days?
We also fought a Quasi-War with the French during their Revolution. 1798 to 1800.
They gave some support.
When I think about it, they didn’t support us against the Brits because they liked us. They just hated the Brits so much more.
However that was about six changes of government ago.
he is correct in calling them our oldest
they are also our first national enemy, too
Had I been in their situation I might have done the same. No one likes to be involved in something but kept in the dark.
Well, it’s the first true thing I’ve heard him say in a while. And besides, this bunch slaps UK every chance they get.
Stop with your Wingnut propaganda. John Kerry met with both sides in Paris. The North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong!
Probably the Viet Meim, Chicoms and some real radicals.
*giggle*
France was the Confederacy’s best ally providing the south with arms during the war for states rights.
I think Morocco was first - I think they were proud of that at Epcot.
As you may know, Morocco was officially during World War II, but allowed American troops to land there and use it as a base to push into North Africa. General George S. Patton loved the Moroccans for that reason.

Naturally a UK paper would bring this up, probably for reasons of partisan advocacy.
So this is “nuance” in action.
